Premier League stadium updates: From expansions to new beginnings in 2025

It's a new year, which means a whole host of Premier League stadium updates and new builds. Clubs have undertaken significant stadium developments to enhance the fan experience and accommodate growing supporter bases, and 2025 is set to be another big year.

The year 2025 is set to be an interesting year for news regarding Premier League club stadiums. We already know that Everton's new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium will open fully in 2025. But what about the rest of the league? Below is an overview of each team's stadium updates for the 2024/25 season.

Arsenal – Emirates Stadium updates 2025

Arsenal has begun the process of looking to expand on the Emirates stadium, much to the joy of the fans. Reports in early December 2024 suggested that Arsenal had started to look at how they could expand the stadium beyond the current 60,000 capacity and move closer to 80,000. The plans would see them take the spot as the largest stadium in the country.

No actual timeline has been suggested, though the club has enormous demands for tickets, and with their continued push for the Premier League title, that demand will only increase. The new capacity would be a roughly 33% increase on what the Emirates capacity can hold today. 2025 will likely see some updates, but it seems for now, we will, at best get fan opinions on the topic, with Arsenal not seemingly in any rush to push forward.

Aston Villa – Villa Park updates 2025

Progress has been made on the Villa Park expansion; however, for now, it's mostly on the exterior of the stadium and support infrastructure. The latest update we received was that the local council wanted to improve transport links, while Aston Villa plans to open its own fan zone soon.

Bournemouth – Vitality Stadium updates 2025

With plans to move to a new stadium by 2027, Bournemouth will need to be ready for a busy 2025. With the smallest stadium in the Premier League right now at just 11,307, Bournemouth will need to do something. For now, plans are in place for an 18,500-capacity stadium, which is a big step forward for a club looking to push on having made themselves a Premier League mainstay.

Brentford – Gtech Community Stadium updates 2025

As one of the newest stadiums in the league, the Gtech Community Stadium is not set for any major changes in the coming year.

Brighton & Hove Albion – Amex Stadium updates 2025

2025 will see Brighton & Hove complete and start a number of projects. Safe standing, a fan zone, moving the away section, and a new bar are all planned in the coming years. As Brighton continues to push into the big league within the Premier League, the club will likely continue to try and expand on the stadium.

Chelsea – Stamford Bridge updates 2025

Chelsea has long planned to move to a new stadium. However, plans were dealt a blow in December 2024 when land in Earl's Court near Stamford Bridge was ruled out due to a planned shopping centre and housing project. The more likely option is to redevelop Stamford Bridge, which would require the approval of the Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) of over 76% if they plan to do any work on the current stadium.

Crystal Palace – Selhurst Park updates 2025

In January 2025, a club statement confirms the positive progress of Selhurst Park's redevelopment. With the preliminary steps completed, the club is now entering the final planning stage. This phase involves negotiating with contractors, with plans to commence work by the end of the 2024/25 season. The club has secured a final legal agreement with the local council, which facilitates the redevelopment of the main stand at Selhurst Park.

In a December update, the club announced slight modifications to the original design, noting that these changes will also need the council's approval. The alterations will involve the seating layout, parking arrangements, and the proposed fanzine, all aimed at complying with the new safety regulations established by the Croydon Council.

Everton – Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium updates 2025

Everton's new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock is set to be completed midway through the 2024/25 season. The club plans to move into the new ground at the start of the 2025/26 season, leaving Goodison Park. The stadium, situated just over two miles from Goodison Park on the banks of the River Mersey, will have a capacity of 52,888.

Fulham – Craven Cottage updates 2025

For now, the club has recently built a new Riverside Stand and it looks like no new developments are set to be done in 2025.

Ipswich Town – Portman Road updates 2025

With the recent promotion to the Premier League, the main priority for the time being, Ipswich don't have plans to make any changes to Portman Road in 2025. However, if the club were to remain, they may use their newfound financial might to expand the stadium.

Leicester City – King Power Stadium updates 2025

Plans are still in place for Leicester City to expand their stadium. However, no fresh news would lead us to believe we will see meaningful progress in 2025.

Liverpool – Anfield updates 2025

Ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Liverpool announced an expanded capacity for Anfield, making it the fifth-largest stadium in the Premier League. This expansion allows more fans to attend matches and improves the overall atmosphere.

Manchester City – Etihad Stadium updates 2025

A £300 million renovation project for the North Stand of the Etihad Stadium has been approved. The plan includes the construction of a new hotel and a covered fan park with a capacity of approximately 6,000 fans.

Additional features will encompass 7,900 extra seats in the North Stand, alongside a ‘Sky Bar’ that will be linked to the new hotel. The expansion will also introduce more VIP areas and 450 premium seats. The new stand will open during the 2025/26 season, so work is expected to begin during 2025.

These changes are expected to enhance the overall capacity to 61,474, positioning it as the fourth largest stadium in the UK, following Old Trafford, the London Stadium, and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Manchester United – Old Trafford updates 2025

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of either upgrading Old Trafford or building a new stadium with a 100,000-seat capacity. A task force, which includes Lord Sebastian Coe and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, has submitted a preliminary feasibility report assessing both alternatives.

The projected cost of a new stadium is approximately £2 billion, while renovating Old Trafford could boost its capacity to 87,000 seats. The club intends to reach a final decision by the season's end, with a new stadium being the preferred choice.

This enhancement has the potential to deliver significant economic advantages, estimated at £7.3 billion annually and the creation of 90,000 jobs. According to fan surveys, a majority support the construction of a new stadium, with 52% in favour. It is anticipated that a new stadium would take roughly seven years to complete.

The Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA) has urged Manchester United to tackle the issue of “persistent standing” by fans in specific parts of Old Trafford, such as the Stretford End. Although the club asserts there have been no recorded injuries due to standing, the SGSA's worries could result in a decrease in stadium capacity if the situation isn’t remedied.

To address these concerns, the club has already created safe-standing zones equipped with barrier rails.

The project will likely see major movement in 2025, with government backing for the overall project confirmed. However, no direct funding will be put towards any of the footballing elements of the project. Due to the wider project's implications, the approval process is expected to be fairly slow. However, more news is expected in 2025.

Newcastle United – St James' Park updates 2025

Alongside Manchester United, Newcastle United are one of the two clubs likely to get major news in 2025. While we may not see any work done, by Summer 2025, both clubs are expected to have announced their plans ahead of the 2025 season start.

If St James' Park is to be expanded, it will have to be in “working order” in time for the stadium to host the EUROs, while plans for a new stadium would mean St James' Park would have to remain until at least after that date. Fan favour seems to be with staying at St James' Park, despite the apparent increase in revenue from a new stadium.

An update in late January confirmed that club staff had now seen the two possible projects. An 8,000 capacity upgrade to St James' Park, or a new 70,000-seater stadium on the Leazes Park site. This news also confirmed that the project won't get any sort of confirmation till closer to the end of the season. A fan forum in March is now expected to be a key date for the club to decide which project gets their full backing.

Another issue is where Newcastle might play during any stadium construction work. While Sunderland was quickly ruled out, a possible move to Murrayfield could now be on the cards.

Nottingham Forest – City Ground updates 2025

Plans for a new stand remain on track, though a timeline of the updates are yet known. Plans are with the city council, with the club set to expand ‘as quickly as possible‘ once those are approved. In the long term, the club want to expand to a 50,000 capacity at the City Ground.

Southampton – St Mary's Stadium updates 2025

Phil Parsons, chief executive of Southampton FC, stated in December 2024, “For the club to thrive and remain in the Premier League, enhancing our revenue streams is essential, with the development of the St Mary's Waterfront area being key to this goal.” This sentiment reflects a common theme in modern football amid the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

While Southampton faces challenges in the Premier League, expanding the stadium will help ensure the club's financial stability in the long run. Southampton City Council leader Lorna Fielker remarked, “This marks an exciting initial step towards a cohesive vision for Southampton's future.” Although no official timeline has been announced, work on the project will begin in the coming years.

Work is expected to begin in 2025.

Tottenham Hotspur – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium updates 2025

Being the newest stadium in the Premier League, no plans are in place to make any changes to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium outside of a possible sale of the naming rights.

West Ham United – London Stadium updates 2025

Due to West Ham's agreement with the London Stadium, for now, no updates are likely to happen.

Wolverhampton Wanderers – Molineux Stadium updates 2025

Plans to expand the Molineux were put on hold back in 2021, with the club instead investing in the squad to push for the Premier League. As of now, plans to expand the stadium remain on hold.
