Rayo Vallecano handed major Vallecas boost as key stadium decision finally given green light

Rayo Vallecano have been given the green light to return to their historic home after a three-month suspension was finally lifted.

A second audit has found significant improvements to Estadio de Vallecas, although the long-running dispute with the Community of Madrid is not over.

The Community of Madrid has lifted the suspension of Rayo Vallecano's concession for Estadio de Vallecas after a second audit found a significant improvement in the stadium's technical condition and documentation.

The problems began on 28th July when regional authorities suspended the concession following an audit which identified widespread deterioration and serious regulatory non-compliance affecting the venue's safety and operation.

Rayo were subsequently forced to move their home fixtures to Butarque, while work was carried out to address the issues identified in the original inspection. The club also commissioned its own audit covering the stadium's safety and sanitary conditions.

A second report from Instalaciones Cedial was then reviewed by the Community of Madrid, which concluded that the facilities were now in a condition that allowed them to operate normally. Regional authorities also highlighted the improvement in the stadium's physical condition and documentation.

However, Rayo will not immediately return to Vallecas.

Their match against Espanyol on 15th September had already been moved to Butarque, while their next fixture was away to Osasuna before the international break.

The club are therefore expected to return to Estadio de Vallecas against Athletic Club on 10th October, subject to confirmation.

The wider dispute remains unresolved, with the Community of Madrid continuing proceedings over the possible termination of Rayo's concession. Authorities maintain that the club seriously breached its obligations relating to the stadium.

Getting Estadio de Vallecas back into usable condition is an important step for Rayo and their supporters, particularly after being forced to play home matches elsewhere.

The historic stadium is a major part of the club's identity, so having it available again is significant.

However, lifting the suspension should not be mistaken for the end of the stadium's problems.

If the Community of Madrid is correct that a comprehensive redevelopment is ultimately required, this should be viewed as the start of a much longer process.
