Rayo Vallecano's long-awaited return to Estadio de Vallecas has finally been confirmed, but the La Liga side's homecoming has been overshadowed by fresh controversy surrounding the stadium's future.
The Community of Madrid lifted the suspension of the venue on September 14, allowing Rayo to return after around a month and a half without their own stadium.
Their first scheduled home game back was due to be against Athletic Club on October 10, but the return has now been brought forward with the revival of the Trofeo de Vallecas.
Trofeo de Vallecas return sparks fresh debate
Rayo welcomed Italian side Cagliari to Vallecas on October 3 for the tenth edition of the Trofeo de Vallecas, with the visitors winning 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
The trophy was discontinued in 2020, while supporters have questioned why it has returned now, with some accusing president Raul Martin Presa of using the fixture as a distraction from the ongoing stadium dispute.
The return of the trophy still attracted criticism from supporters, with ticket prices of between €10 and €70 for non-season-ticket holders questioned, while fans also criticised the lack of compensation for the three matches Rayo were forced to play away from Vallecas.
Despite the latest controversy, regional sports councillor Mariano de Paco has insisted that the Community of Madrid will ensure Rayo can continue playing at Estadio de Vallecas.
However, the stadium's long-term future remains uncertain, with the regional government considering terminating Rayo's concession.

The Community of Madrid has proposed a €60m renovation, which would take around 24 months and increase capacity from 14,000 to 18,500, but it would still need to decide who manages the venue.
A proposal from PSOE and Mas Madrid to rule out private investors and establish a dialogue involving Rayo, supporters, residents and local businesses was rejected by PP and Vox.
Both sides agree that Rayo's future should remain at Vallecas, but the disagreement over how the stadium should be managed means the club's return is unlikely to end the controversy surrounding the venue.
FGG Says: Rayo's return will not end the Vallecas controversy
Rayo will be delighted to finally return to Estadio de Vallecas, but the club's homecoming feels more like a temporary solution than the end of the dispute.
The Trofeo de Vallecas could have been a welcome celebration, yet the criticism over ticket prices and the uncertainty surrounding the stadium's concession show that tensions remain. Until there is a clear agreement over who will manage the venue and what happens next, Rayo's stadium saga is unlikely to disappear.
