Real Betis have been handed a major boost over their ambitious Benito Villamarin redevelopment after officials moved to reject attempts to halt the project.

The decision clears a significant hurdle for the club, with the next phase of construction now expected to begin this autumn.

Betis get green light after environmentalist opposition

The future of the New Villamarin project had been questioned after environmental and neighbourhood organisations submitted appeals against the redevelopment.

Ecologistas en Accion and Urban Century 29 both raised concerns over planning matters, the use and valuation of land, environmental impact and safety.

However, Seville's Urban Planning Department is set to reject both appeals, meaning Betis can proceed with greater confidence.

Officials said the relevant land use had been established through the approved Planning Study, while the valuation process had followed national legislation.

The city's fire service has also assessed the plans and concluded that the available open spaces would be sufficient for a full evacuation.

Work is currently focused on excavating 25-metre-deep walls, which are crucial to the stability of the new main stand and adjacent building.

That stage is expected to finish between late September and October before excavation for the new stand begins.

The adjacent building will reportedly be 80% dedicated to a hotel, with the LaLiga side said to have received interest from several international four- and five-star chains.

This is a major moment for Betis because the appeals had the potential to create uncertainty around a project that is already reshaping the club's future.

With the planning objections set to be rejected, the focus can now return to getting the redevelopment moving through its next stages.
