Real Zaragoza supporters will have to wait longer than expected to return to their new home, as the redevelopment of La Romareda has fallen behind schedule and the club faces an extended stay at its temporary stadium.

The €12.6 million construction project has encountered several problems, meaning the new venue will no longer be ready for the beginning of the 2027/28 season.

Zaragoza mayor Natalia Chueca has acknowledged that the original June 2027 completion target will not be achieved, with the stadium now expected to open towards the end of next year at the earliest.

The delays have been blamed on a combination of extreme summer heat and unexpected infrastructure problems discovered during construction.

One particular complication involves a pipe connecting the stadium area with Miguel Servet Hospital. The contractor, a consortium involving OHLA and Altuna y Uría, could face financial penalties of up to €12.6 million, although responsibility for the delays and the final consequences have yet to be determined.

New La Romareda construction continues despite setbacks

Despite the setback, progress continues on several sections of the stadium, with the South Stand structure and seating now completed. Work has moved on to drainage, sewage and preparations for the installation of toilets and catering facilities.

The North Stand structure is also complete, with seating installation underway. Meanwhile, the East and North-East stands are taking shape, while the more complicated West Stand remains further behind.

The first aluminium façade panels have also begun arriving, although these are being tested before a decision is made on whether to continue with the material.

A project plagued by politics

The project has also sparked political controversy, with opposition councillors questioning aspects of the stadium's lease agreement and financial arrangements.

Councillor Víctor Serrano admitted making a mistake when previously discussing the club's rental payments, explaining that he had confused the figures for the new stadium with those for the temporary ground.

Despite reports, Real Zaragoza will not begin paying rent on the completed stadium until it is formally handed over. Initial annual payments are expected to be €1.1 million.

FGG says: The fans are itching for a return

For supporters, the biggest concern remains the delayed return home, which is causing widespread anger. With construction continuing and further work still required, the wait to experience the new La Romareda is now set to extend well into the 2027/28 campaign, and perhaps beyond.
