Supporters heading to Stadium of Light should be aware that a strict bag policy and matchday security operation are in place.

As with many major grounds, the emphasis is on safety and efficient entry, so arriving prepared and travelling light is key to avoiding delays at the turnstiles.

FootballGroundGuide takes a look at the key rules at the home of Sunderland AFC.

What is the bag policy at the Stadium of Light?

The Stadium of Light enforces a maximum A4 size limit on all bags, meaning only small handbags or similar items are permitted inside.

Any bag larger than A4 will not be allowed into the stadium under any circumstances. This includes rucksacks, suitcases, or large holdalls, regardless of their contents.

All permitted bags are subject to inspection, and supporters should be prepared for security checks as they enter via the turnstiles.

Are there bag storage facilities at the Stadium of Light?

There are no bag storage or left luggage facilities available at the Stadium of Light.

Supporters arriving with oversized bags will be refused entry, with no option to store items at or near the stadium.

As a result, fans are strongly advised to make alternative arrangements in advance if travelling with luggage.

Stadium of Light security checks and entry procedures

Turnstiles at the Stadium of Light typically open 90 minutes before kick-off, and all supporters will be subject to security checks before entering.

Bag searches form part of the process, and stewards may also carry out additional checks where necessary.

To help speed things up, fans are encouraged to arrive early and have any bags ready for inspection.

Supporters are permitted to bring a limited number of items into the stadium, provided they comply with regulations.

These include small bags under A4 size, compact cameras, small fold-up umbrellas, and merchandise purchased from the club shop.

Non-offensive flags and banners are also allowed, provided they are smaller than 2m x 1m, contain no poles, and meet fire safety standards.

Essential childcare and medical items are permitted where required.

What items are prohibited at the Stadium of Light?

A wide range of items are not allowed inside the ground as part of standard safety regulations.

These include alcohol, canned drinks, glass bottles, flasks, and plastic bottles, along with laptops, tablets, and large camera equipment.

Items such as air horns, musical instruments, and video recording devices are also banned.

Pyrotechnics, including fireworks, flares, and smoke canisters, are strictly prohibited, as are knives, weapons, tools, and any potentially dangerous items.

Large umbrellas, buggies, prams, and any bags exceeding the A4 limit are also not permitted.

Flags or banners that are offensive or exceed the permitted size will be confiscated.

Can you re-enter the Stadium of Light?

Once you have scanned your ticket and entered the stadium, you will not be able to leave and return. If you exit the ground for any reason, your ticket will no longer be valid for re-entry.
