Wrexham Kop Stand architects unveil ambitious designs for new 70,000-seater national stadium

Populous have unveiled plans for a 70,000-seat national stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as part of an ambitious new sports complex.

The project will become the country's largest stadium and is designed to accommodate major international sporting events, including the possibility of a future Olympic Games.

Populous reveal design for Vietnam's Rach Chiec Stadium

Architecture studio Populous has unveiled its design for Rach Chiec Stadium, which will be built on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City as Vietnam's new national stadium.

With around 70,000 seats, the venue will be approximately 30,000 seats larger than the country's current record holder, My Dinh National Stadium.

The stadium will feature a distinctive diamond-patterned facade inspired by the shape of nipa palms growing alongside rivers in the region.

A fully retractable roof will allow the playing area to be environmentally controlled while helping shield surrounding residential areas from noise.

Designed primarily for football and other team sports, the stadium will also be capable of hosting around 90% of Olympic sports, making it a potential venue for a wide range of major international competitions.

Rach Chiec Stadium will form part of a 200-hectare national sports complex, also masterplanned by Populous. The wider development will include an 18,000-seat arena, alongside commercial facilities and public spaces.

The project forms part of Vietnam's ambitions to improve its sporting infrastructure and potentially host events such as the Southeast Asian Games, the Asian Cup and a future Olympics.

Populous senior principal Andrew Tulen said the stadium and arena would anchor a wider park-like environment, with an emphasis on accessibility, connectivity and flexibility.

The firm is also working on the new Kop Stand for Wrexham AFC, alongside several other major stadium projects around the world.

Rach Chiec Stadium represents an ambitious investment in Vietnam's sporting infrastructure, with its proposed capacity and flexible design intended to accommodate a wide range of events.

The retractable roof, distinctive exterior and wider sports complex could help establish the venue as a major destination for football and international competitions.

However, the project's wider ambitions will depend on its delivery and Vietnam's ability to secure the major events it hopes to host.
