One of football's leading stadium architects has unveiled a bold vision that could transform how future World Cups are staged.
The concept imagines a 50,000-seat floating stadium travelling from one tournament host nation to the next.

Mark Fenwick, the architect behind Valencia's Nou Mestalla and several of the globe's most unique venues, has outlined an extraordinary proposal for a floating football stadium capable of hosting matches at future World Cups.
Fenwick, whose previous projects include Qatar's innovative Stadium 974, believes a 50,000-seat venue built on a giant floating platform could travel across the world, becoming a permanent centrepiece for the tournament every four years.
The concept is designed to address one of the biggest criticisms of major sporting events – the construction of expensive stadiums that are underused once the competition ends.
Speaking about the idea to the Spanish press, Fenwick questioned whether it still makes sense to build large stadiums for only a few weeks of use, arguing that modern naval engineering has already demonstrated many of the technologies needed to support such a project.
He suggested the stadium could become “the first truly global stadium”, moving between host nations rather than requiring a brand-new venue to be built for each tournament.
However, the proposal remains purely conceptual, with significant engineering and logistical challenges still to overcome.
Stability in rough seas, towing a structure between continents, integrating it into ports and safely evacuating 50,000 spectators would all require solutions on an unprecedented scale.

Fenwick has built a reputation for challenging conventional stadium design, and this concept is another example of thinking beyond the traditional model.
The ambition of tackling football's “white elephant” problem is certainly commendable.
It's an extraordinary idea, but at present it feels much closer to a thought experiment than a realistic World Cup solution.
The logistical, operational and safety challenges involved in moving and operating a floating 50,000-seat stadium would be immense, making it difficult to see the concept progressing beyond the drawing board anytime soon.
