Monaco ultras, primarily represented by Ultras Monaco '94 (UM 94), are the heartbeat of support at Stade Louis II.
Ultras Monaco '94 was founded in the mid-1990s to bring more colour and passion to the club's support base. It is an expectation they have lived up to, representing the true spirit of the club in every match.
Armed with fierce loyalty, Ultras Monaco '98, alongside other popular supporter groups, have helped establish the club's reputation as a force to be reckoned with. This is always evident when Les Monegasques welcome teams at Stade Louis II for Ligue 1 and European encounters.
From the red and white flags, coordinated choreography, and tifos, this post delves deeper into the world of ultras that make Stade Louis II an intimidating place for away fans, so keep reading to discover more.
Who are the Monaco ultras? A history
Before the establishment of UM 94, several ultra groups were associated with Monaco during the 1970s and 80s, including the Sconvolts and Supporters Rouges et Blancs. After both of these groups dissolved, UM 94 emerged in 1994 to fill the void.
The UM 94 was founded by a group of teenagers who aimed to create a more vibrant atmosphere inside the Stade Louis II, and it quickly gained popularity. Although they weren't taken seriously in their early years, the group continued to grow.
By the late 1990s and early 2000s, their membership swelled to thousands, and displays and tifos became commonplace in the stadium.
While they are referred to as an ultra group, UM 94 is not known for fighting with other supporters, causing trouble in stadiums, or making political statements.
They do not adhere to any established “codes” like many other ultra groups in Europe; their primary concern is providing unconditional support for the club.
The motto of the group is “Everywhere, Always,” reflecting their commitment to following the team across France and throughout Europe during UEFA competitions. UM 94 is recognised for having one of the best away supports in France, largely due to their passionate members.
Where do the Monaco ultras sit?
The Monaco ultras are located in the Pesages stand at the northern end of the Stade Louis II, behind one of the goals.
Due to the stadium's layout, which includes a running track, getting immersed in the action is often challenging for the ultras. Still, they always strive to make their presence known..
The away end is at the opposite end of the stadium to the Monaco ultras, so visiting supporters get a brilliant view of UM 94's colourful tifos and displays in all their glory, should it be a game where these are being shown.
Monaco ultras incidents and tifos
As mentioned before, the current Monaco ultras aren't widely known for being involved in controversial incidents, but the group that preceded them, the Sconvolts, were. In fact, it was after heavy conflict during a trip to Nimes in January 1993 that the group dissolved.
UM 94 go after Mbappe
The UM 94 have only really made the news for controversial reasons back when Kylian Mbappe was a Monaco player. In 2017, the Frenchman was reportedly asking for obscene money to stay at the club despite only being 18 years old. In response, UM 94 released the following statement:
“These last few days, we have learned with stupefaction and indignation the numbers spoken about by the media concerning Kylian Mbappe, but also about his salary demands to extend his contract with our club. We don't believe that any player is worth so many million euros.
“We believe in football as the people's game, and so value like the love of the shirt and respect for the club that formed you in life. We can't accept that one of our players is permitted to act like this and demand such sums without having proven himself in more than a few dozen matches at the professional level.
“We stand equally to remind Kylian Mbappe and his group that no one is above the institution of AS Monaco.”
