Athletic Club’s resounding 4-0 aggregate win over Atlético Madrid on Thursday night, in which they progressed to the final of the Copa del Rey, should have been an entirely happy occasion.
Unfortunately, during the second half, an Athletic Club fan was taken ill and the game had to be delayed by nearly half an hour. Today, the Basque club have confirmed what many feared.
Tributes paid to Athletic Club fan who passed away
Sadly, Athletic Club supporter Miguel Ocio passed away on Saturday. Ocio had been a member with Athletic Club for more than 40 years.
The club paid tribute to Ocio at Sunday night’s home match against Barcelona, leaving flowers on his seat. In a touching moment, San Mamés rose to its feet to applaud Ocio before the game.
Athletic Club said the following: “Tribute was paid in the stands in memory of Miguel Ocio, who died yesterday after being treated on Thursday in San Mamés during the semi-final.”
“His family placed a bouquet of flowers in his seat to honour our member who has been part of the club for 42 years. Rest in peace.”
