Barcelona fans produced a notable moment on Sunday night, as they took aim at Real Madrid during a home victory over Osasuna.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the incident occurred shortly after Raphinha opened the scoring, with a chant directed firmly at Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso.

As Barcelona moved into control of the match, sections of the crowd could be heard chanting “Xabi, stay”, a reference to the growing uncertainty surrounding Alonso’s future at the Bernabeu, and this chant was picked up on social media, as it continued outside the stadium.

Alonso is under mounting pressure a couple of months into his tenure as Madrid manager, following a run of inconsistent results that has unsettled the club’s hierarchy and supporters.

Madrid were seven points ahead of Barcelona some weeks ago, but now trail the Catalan side by four points after 17 league games.

Pressure builds on Alonso amid Madrid uncertainty

Alonso’s position has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks, with Madrid’s board understood to be closely monitoring results.

Reports suggested that a defeat on Sunday against Alaves could have significantly accelerated discussions around his future, but his team won the game 2-1.

Despite arriving with strong backing and a clear project last summer, Madrid have struggled for rhythm this season. Injuries, tactical adjustments and an unsettled squad have contributed to performances that have fallen short of expectations.

The situation has created a stark contrast between the two rivals. While Barcelona are enjoying a renewed sense of optimism following their return to the Camp Nou, Madrid are facing uncomfortable questions about direction and leadership.

Clasico history gives Camp Nou chant added context

In April 2024, Real Madrid supporters chanted “Xavi, stay” during a league meeting at the Bernabeu, mocking then Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, amid uncertainty over his future.

That match ended in a 3-2 victory for Madrid, a result that effectively secured the La Liga title. Xavi had already announced his intention to leave at the end of the season, before later reversing his decision under pressure from president Joan Laporta.

Despite that change of course, Xavi was eventually dismissed months later, highlighting the unforgiving nature of management at both clubs.

Barcelona supporters appeared keen to reference that episode, using the chant to underline how quickly fortunes can turn for even the most respected figures.

FGG Says

This was a classic example of football rivalry playing out in real time. Barcelona fans sensed vulnerability at Real Madrid and responded with a chant that was as pointed as it was symbolic.

While humorous on the surface, it reflected Madrid’s situation under Xabi Alonso, and moments like this only amplify the pressure.
