The English Premier League is widely considered the ‘best' in the world when it comes to quality on the pitch, but there are many fans who believe the leagues further down in England's football pyramid offer more in terms of entertainment and genuine fan experience.

In terms of unpredictability, the Championship and League One are hard to beat. In recent years, former Premier League venues such as Fratton Park and the Cardiff City Stadium have become regular stops for supporters in the third tier, adding to the range and quality of stadiums available for away fans to visit.

Below, we will take you through the five best away days in League One right now, with the stadium, away end, local area and transport links factoring in the decision making.

Best Away Days in League One: The Top Five

5) Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bolton Wanderers

There are several grounds on this list that were built for Premier League football and have been a regular home stadium in the Premier League recently, Bolton's Toughsheet Community Stadium is one of those.

While not technically located in Bolton itself, the ground sits in the nearby town of Horwich and is extremely easy to reach, with Horwich Parkway railway station just a short walk away.

With a “big club away” feeling about the stadium, travelling sides typically have an allocation of 3,000, making the two-tiered stand one of the biggest away ends in League One. It has also seen some iconic moments with Birmingham City's Paul Caddis scoring a 93rd minute equaliser to keep the Blues up on the final day of the season.

With a capacity of 28,723, it is currently the second-largest stadium in League One and was last used for Premier League football in 2012.

4) Sincil Bank, Lincoln City

Lincoln City’s Sincil Bank may be the smallest ground on this list, but it offers one of the most enjoyable away day experiences in the division.

The stadium has a capacity of 10,669 and retains a compact, traditional feel, with the cathedral visible in the background adding to its character. Visiting supporters are typically given around 2,000 to 2,100 seats in the Stacey West Stand.

The stadium is a short walk from the city centre with good pubs along the way, ultimately taking you to an atmospheric away end that is very close to the action.

At the time of writing, Lincoln are pushing strongly for promotion, meaning Sincil Bank may soon be hosting second tier foootball for the first time since 1961.

3) Edgeley Park, Stockport County

Stockport County's home stadium is often rated as one of the best for atmosphere in League One, and like the other two stadiums on the list may soon be a Championship ground.

Only outside the playoffs on goal difference at the time of writing, the Hatters will be hoping they will be hosting second tier matches next season but for now can take pride in the fact that they rank in the top three of this list.

There is a typical allocation of around 900 for travelling sides, which can be increased to 1,400 for cup ties, and fans will be able to create a great atmosphere due to be located close to the pitch and behind one of the goals.

There are also long-term plans to redevelop parts of the stadium, which could significantly change the look of Edgeley Park in the future.

2) Bloomfield Road, Blackpool

Narrowly missing out on a number one spot and yet another former Premier League ground is Blackpool's Bloomfield Road.

Often regarded as one of the best away days in the country due to a ‘classic seaside day out' many League One fans look forward to a trip to Lancashire more than any.

A 15-minute walk from the town centre, visiting supporters can see the famous landmark Blackpool Tower and walk along the beach before entering the 17,338-seater venue and having the well-known nightlife to look forward to after.

Like Edgeley Park, Bloomfield Road is expected to undergo a number of ground improvements this summer so fans can expected an even better fan experience when they arrive the following season.

1) Valley Parade, Bradford City

Coming in at number one on the list is Bradford City's Valley Parade, the fourth-biggest in League One.

The Bantams are known for their passionate support and affordable ticket prices, which have helped create some of the highest attendances in the lower leagues. During their League Two promotion season in the 2024-25 campaign, Bradford averaged crowds of 17,584, almost double the next highest in the division.

With the station located less than a mile from the ground, fans have a short walk to the stadium and are allowed a generous allocation of 1,800.

The region that Bradford is in is one of the most affordable places to grab a pint in the country, giving fans the opportunity to enjoy a more than affordable day out.
