Birmingham City chief provides latest update on Sports Quarter and Powerhouse stadium consultations

Birmingham City's ambitious Sports Quarter project continues to gather momentum as work progresses behind the scenes on the club's proposed new home.

While consultations are advancing, club officials have stressed that a development of this scale cannot be rushed.

Blues chief executive Jeremy Dale has revealed to BirminghamLive that consultation work on the club's proposed Sports Quarter and 62,000-capacity Powerhouse stadium is progressing rapidly as plans continue to move forward.

Knighthead's vision for the 48-acre Wheels Park site would see Birmingham relocate to a new stadium at the heart of a major regeneration project, alongside new transport links, a training ground, women's stadium, arena, housing and other mixed-use developments.

Speaking about the project, Dale said extensive consultation has already taken place with supporters and local communities, while discussions are also ongoing with emergency services to ensure the proposed stadium can safely accommodate 62,000 spectators.

His comments come after reports surrounding proposals for a nearby nature conservation site and debate over its potential impact on the wider development.

Despite the positive progress, Dale acknowledged that delivering a project of this magnitude takes time, pointing to the significant infrastructure work required before construction can begin.

He added that the stadium project is being led by Nick Smith in close collaboration with Knighthead, while the club continues to focus on improving Birmingham City on and off the pitch.

Dale also reflected on the transformation of St Andrew's since Knighthead's takeover, explaining that most of the major investment was completed during the ownership's first two years.

More recent work has focused on maintaining the stadium, including converting the Globe and Ball into a café that also serves supporters on matchdays.

Large-scale stadium developments are rarely quick, but Birmingham's leadership continues to strike a measured tone.

The emphasis on consultation and infrastructure suggests the club is focused on getting the foundations right before construction gathers pace.
