Cambridge United supporters have expressed mixed emotions after the club began exploring the possibility of leaving their long-standing Abbey Stadium home.

While some believe a new 15,000-capacity ground is essential for the club's ambitions, others are concerned about losing the character and memories attached to their current home.

How have Cambridge United fans reacted to the new stadium plans?

The U's have begun a feasibility study into a potential move to a site around a mile from the Abbey, with the proposed new stadium expected to accommodate approximately 15,000 supporters.

Michael Barnes, the club's stadium announcer, believes relocating is necessary if Cambridge United are to grow, pointing to congestion around the existing ground and the difficulty of accommodating significantly more supporters.

Speaking to the BBC, he said the club needed to move on from the past while retaining a connection to the city, adding that the future should be somewhere else but still close to Cambridge.

Lifelong supporter Anouska Wright also felt the proposed location near the airport was promising, describing a more positive atmosphere around the latest discussions. However, she admitted the emotional attachment to the Abbey would make leaving difficult.

Liam McNally, who has attended matches for more than 50 years, similarly acknowledged that the club had outgrown its current home, but warned against moving into a soulless stadium without character or atmosphere.

He believes any replacement must offer strong transport links and facilities for the wider community while protecting the club's identity.

The feasibility study is being conducted alongside Hill Group and the Greater Cambridge Development Corporation, with costs, potential income, design and additional facilities all under consideration.

However, chairman Godric Smith has stressed that the Abbey remains the club's home for the foreseeable future, with Cambridge United potentially staying there for the best part of the next decade regardless of the study's outcome.

The mixed reaction is understandable, with the Abbey holding decades of memories for generations of supporters.

However, the club's current ground also presents obvious limitations if they want to increase attendances and revenue.

A new stadium should not simply be bigger, it must retain the atmosphere and identity that makes the Abbey special.
