Former Leeds United defender Tony Dorigo has dismissed concerns that expanding Elland Road to around 53,000 seats could weaken the intimidating atmosphere that has made the stadium such a difficult venue for visiting teams.
Leeds are progressing with a major redevelopment of their historic home, with work on the West Stand beginning in June 2026, a project that will increase capacity from approximately 37,645 to up to 53,000, modernise facilities and help the stadium meet UEFA Category 4 requirements.
However, with Elland Road's noise and passionate home support regarded as key parts of the matchday experience, questions remain over whether adding thousands of seats can preserve the atmosphere that supporters have created over the years.
Dorigo, who made more than 100 appearances for Leeds during his playing career, believes the expansion will not necessarily come at the expense of the ground's character.
Dorigo explains why Elland Road atmosphere can survive expansion
Asked whether the increased capacity could dilute the atmosphere at Elland Road, Dorigo told FootballGroundGuide: “I don’t think so. Elland Road is a top stadium and the noise is intimidating for opponents, but this comes from the energy and the way the team are playing on the pitch.
“So as long as we see the passion and good tempo to Leeds play, the atmosphere will be loud and with more seats, the fans can make more noise.”
Leeds have made retaining that identity a central part of their redevelopment plans, with the club having previously stated that protecting and enhancing the stadium's atmosphere is a key design objective, with acoustic consultants brought into the project during the planning process.
The expansion is also intended to address demand for tickets, with the club previously reporting a substantial season-ticket waiting list.
Improved general admission provision, more comfortable seating, upgraded concourses and enhanced hospitality facilities form part of the plans.

Leeds press ahead with Elland Road redevelopment
The West Stand is the first major phase of the project, with the North Stand also set for expansion as the scheme progresses.
Leeds have confirmed that the ground will remain operational throughout the redevelopment, with construction and temporary arrangements managed around home fixtures.
The completed stadium is expected to accommodate around 53,000 supporters, placing Elland Road among the largest club grounds in the country.
The club also hopes the upgraded venue will improve its ability to host major international football and other events.
FGG Says: Leeds must preserve what makes Elland Road special
Dorigo's view places the emphasis on the relationship between the team and the supporters rather than capacity alone. More seats will give additional fans the opportunity to attend, but sustaining the atmosphere will depend on maintaining the connection between the stands and the action on the pitch.
Leeds have made that concern part of their stated design ambitions, but the real test will come when the redevelopment is complete and the expanded Elland Road hosts its first full-capacity matches.
