England vs Switzerland: Is Dusseldorf worth visiting?

England are set to take on Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday, 6 June in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

The match will be England's first official visit to the city since the tournament began, however, due to its fantastic travel links, many England fans have been using it as their hub for the tournament.

The city has welcomed a whole host of international fanbases over the past couple of weeks with France supporters effectively making it to their second home. Les Bleus have played two games at the Merkur Spiel-Arena and have won both so England will be hoping for similar luck.

If you are heading to Dusseldorf for the match, here is everything you need to know about the city.

Where is Dusseldorf?

Dusseldorf is the sixth-largest city in Germany and the capital city of North Rhine-Westphalia – Germany's most populous state. It is situated in the northwest of the country and is located in close proximity to other Euro 2024 host cities, Cologne and Frankfurt.

The city has its own international airport and a central railway station that links directly to other major cities in Germany, such as Munich and Berlin, despite both being on the opposite side of the country.

The Merkur Spiel Arena is found around 10km north of the city centre so fans will need to board the local u78 Rheinbahn tram line to get to the stadium for kick-off.

What is Dusseldorf famous for?

One of the most famous parts of Dusseldorf is the River Rhine which flows through the city. The river starts in Germany and flows through Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and France before emptying in the North Sea after passing through the Netherlands. It is one of the biggest rivers in Europe and the biggest in Germany.

Tourists frequently choose to take boat tours down the river when staying in Dusseldorf, as it is a great way to see all that the city has to offer while enjoying a drink or two. The Rhine promenade is a stunning stretch of land in Dusseldorf, where you can enjoy a drink or bite to eat overlooking the river in one of the countless bars.

Another popular tourist spot in Dusseldorf is the Rheinturm, otherwise known as the Rhine Tower. This 240-metre-tall tower offers a stunning view of the city. One unique feature is the revolving observation deck, which allows guests to sit back and enjoy the changing view without having to move.

Is Dusseldorf expensive?

Dusseldorf isn't the most expensive in the world, or in Germany, for that matter. The average cost of a pint in the city is around €4, although this will fluctuate depending on where you choose to drink. For example, pints on the Rhine promenade are typically a little closer to the €4.50 mark.

When it comes to food, prices remain acceptable. The average two-course meal with a drink in Dusseldorf costs around €30 per person.

Typically, hotel prices in Dusseldorf aren't overly expensive either. However, due to Euro 2024, there has been a significant mark-up for June and July.
