England’s biggest Wembley crowds ever

The new Wembley Stadium has hosted some of the biggest occasions in English football since opening in 2007, with England’s international matches regularly attracting crowds of more than 80,000.

From the stadium’s first years to recent friendlies against leading international sides, these are the 10 highest recorded attendances for England men’s senior matches at the new Wembley. The figures exclude matches at the original stadium and fixtures played at other venues.

10. England 1-2 Portugal — 2 June 2016 (82,503)

England’s final home match before Euro 2016 drew 82,503 supporters to Wembley as Roy Hodgson’s side hosted Portugal. Chris Smalling scored the only goal for England, while Bruno Alves was sent off before half-time. Portugal secured victory through a late goal from Nani.

The attendance placed the friendly among the largest crowds for an England international at the new Wembley.

9. England 1-1 Italy — 27 March 2018 (82,598)

England’s friendly against Italy attracted 82,598 fans. Jamie Vardy put the hosts ahead in the second half, but Lorenzo Insigne equalised from the penalty spot late on.

The match was part of England’s preparations for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and brought together two of Europe’s established international sides.

8. England 2-2 Netherlands — 29 March 2016 (82,831)

A crowd of 82,831 watched England face the Netherlands in a friendly ahead of Euro 2016. Harry Kane opened the scoring, but Vincent Janssen equalised from the penalty spot. Jamie Vardy restored England’s lead before Luciano Narsingh scored a late winner for the visitors.

7. England 3-0 Peru — 30 May 2014 (83,578)

England’s final home friendly before the 2014 World Cup attracted 83,578 spectators. Daniel Sturridge, Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka scored as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Peru.

The match was a send-off for England before their trip to Brazil, where they would compete in Group D.

6. England 2-2 Brazil — 23 March 2024 (83,674)

England’s friendly against Brazil drew 83,674 fans to Wembley. The visitors won 1-0 through a late goal from teenage forward Endrick, who scored on his senior international debut.

The fixture was part of England’s preparations for Euro 2024 and featured two of international football’s most recognisable teams.

5. England 2-2 Spain — 15 November 2016 (83,716)

England’s friendly against Spain attracted 83,716 supporters. Adam Lallana and Jamie Vardy gave England a two-goal lead, but Iago Aspas and Isco scored late goals to secure a draw for Spain.

The match was Gareth Southgate’s third game as England manager and his first against a major European opponent.

4. England 0-0 Brazil — 14 November 2017 (84,595)

A crowd of 84,595 watched England hold Brazil to a goalless draw in a friendly at Wembley. The match was played during England’s preparations for the 2018 World Cup and featured a Brazil side that included Neymar.

The attendance remains one of the highest recorded for an England international at the stadium.

3. England 1-0 Belgium — 2 June 2012 (85,091)

England’s friendly against Belgium attracted 85,091 spectators. Danny Welbeck scored the only goal, giving Roy Hodgson a victory in his second match as England manager.

The fixture was England’s final home game before Euro 2012, with the team travelling to Poland and Ukraine shortly afterwards.

2. England 1-2 France — 17 November 2010 (85,495)

England’s friendly against France drew 85,495 fans to Wembley. Laurent Blanc’s side won 2-1, with Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena scoring for the visitors before Peter Crouch pulled one back for England.

The match was played during Fabio Capello’s tenure as England manager and remains the second-highest recorded attendance for an England game at the new stadium.

1. England 4-0 Slovakia — 28 March 2009 (85,512)

The highest recorded attendance for an England men’s senior international at the new Wembley came against Slovakia on 28 March 2009, when 85,512 spectators watched a 4-0 home win.

Wayne Rooney scored twice, while David Beckham and Frank Lampard were also on the scoresheet. The friendly was played as England prepared for their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The attendance remains the benchmark for England’s home internationals at the new Wembley.
