Everton have unveiled another first for Hill Dickinson Stadium after announcing that the club's new waterfront home will host its inaugural drive-in cinema across the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The three-day event, titled “Movies on the Mersey”, will transform the stadium footprint into an outdoor cinema, giving supporters, families and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a series of blockbuster films from the comfort of their vehicles while overlooking the River Mersey.
The initiative forms part of Everton's growing programme of non-matchday events at Hill Dickinson Stadium as the club looks to maximise use of its new venue throughout the year.
Hill Dickinson Stadium to host first-ever drive-in cinema
Movies on the Mersey will take place across Saturday, August 29, Sunday, August 30 and Bank Holiday Monday, August 31.
The weekend begins with Disney-Pixar favourite “Finding Nemo” at 6pm on Saturday, before “Mamma Mia!” is screened later that evening at 9pm.
Sunday's programme opens with the classic musical “Grease” at 6pm before “Back to the Future” rounds off the day's entertainment with a 9pm showing.
Tickets for Saturday and Sunday's screenings are priced at £30 per vehicle, regardless of the number of passengers inside. Each booking includes a designated parking space facing the giant LED screen, while audio will be transmitted directly through each vehicle's FM radio.
Food and drink outlets, along with toilet and refreshment facilities, will be available throughout the event to enhance the matchday-style experience.
The Bank Holiday Monday programme concludes with a special 7.30pm screening of “Howard's Way”, with proceeds supporting Everton in the Community.
Unlike the other screenings, entry for the final event will operate on a pay-what-you-want basis, although supporters must still reserve their place in advance.
For those arriving without a vehicle, Everton have also created a dedicated lawn viewing area where guests can bring their own chairs. Admission to the lawn section has been priced at £10 per person.
Everton continue expanding Hill Dickinson Stadium experience
Chief Revenue Officer Aaron Duckmanton believes the event demonstrates how Hill Dickinson Stadium can become far more than simply a football venue.
“Movies on the Mersey is another exciting first for Hill Dickinson Stadium and a brilliant way for people to experience the venue in a completely different setting,” he said.
“We wanted to create something that feels accessible, fun and memorable for families, supporters and visitors to the city during the August Bank Holiday weekend.
“The film programme offers something for everyone, from family films and musical classics to a special Everton screening of “Howard's Way” in support of Everton in the Community.
“To be able to bring people together on the waterfront for a new family-friendly event, while also supporting Everton in the Community, makes this a really special addition to our summer events programme.”
The drive-in cinema is the latest example of Everton's strategy to establish Hill Dickinson Stadium as a year-round destination.
Alongside football, the venue has already secured major rugby league events, concerts and stadium tours, with the club continuing to explore new ways of attracting visitors and generating additional revenue beyond matchdays.
FGG says: Exactly the type of event a modern stadium needs
Modern football stadiums are increasingly expected to be entertainment venues seven days a week rather than simply places to watch football every other weekend.
Movies on the Mersey is a clever addition to Everton's growing events calendar, offering families an affordable Bank Holiday activity while introducing even more people to Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Combined with charity fundraising through the special Howard's Way screening, it is another positive step towards making the stadium a genuine community hub as well as Everton's new home.
