Former Scotland international calls for ‘incredible’ venue to host the Champions League final (exclusive)

Earlier this week, the hosts for the 2028 and 2029 Champions League finals were announced. The Allianz Arena in Munich has been selected for the 2028 final, while the renovated Camp Nou will host the 2029 final.

The biggest losers from these announcements were the English Football Association (FA), which had made a bid for Wembley Stadium to host the 2029 final. The hope was that Wembley would become the only stadium to have hosted four finals in the Champions League era.

Aside from Wembley, only Old Trafford has previously hosted a Champions League final in England – the 2003 all-Italian affair between Juventus and AC Milan.

Could that soon change, though, with Anfield and the Etihad Stadium now expanded, and with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium widely considered one of the best arenas in the world?

Alan Hutton calls for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to host a Champions League final

Alan Hutton, who was a regular for Tottenham during their run to the Champions League quarter-finals in the 2010/11 season, believes it is only a matter of time until the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium becomes the next English stadium to host a Champions League final.

Speaking to FGG, the former full-back said:

“I think in time the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be in the conversation to host these major finals. A lot of the time these things are decided so many years in advance.

“It is one of the best stadiums in the world. Having been there as a fan and having worked there, I think it is incredible.

“It’s just about biding your time. The stadium speaks for itself and they don’t really need to sell it to anybody. Anyone can see what a great venue it is, so I’m sure in time it will hold a major final.“

FGG says: Is it big enough?

With a capacity of 62,850, there is an argument that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium isn't quite big enough to host a Champions League final. Only three host stadiums since 2000 have had a smaller capacity than the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Hampden Park, Arena AufSchalke and Estadio do Dragao. Perhaps the Europa League final is a more realistic target?
