River Plate top the list – a breakdown of the top 10
At the top of the list, with an average attendance of 84,025 in 2024, was River Plate. The Argentinian giants play their home matches at El Monumental but were underwhelming in the 2024 Argentina Primera Division. They finished fifth, eight points behind the champions, Velez Sarsfield. River finished a point clear of bitter rivals Boca Juniors.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich were close behind River Plate with average attendances of 81,365 and 75,000, respectively. Despite their poor form in the Premier League, which saw manager Erik ten Hag sacked, United had an average attendance of 73,701 at Old Trafford in 2024 – the highest of any English side.
Inter and AC Milan were fifth and seventh on this list, respectively, with Real Madrid sandwiched in between them. The final three places in the top 10 were occupied by Roma, West Ham United and Olympique Marseille.
Highest average attendances in the Premier League in 2024
As already mentioned, the Red Devils led the way for the highest average attendance in 2024 for Premier League clubs. Surprisingly, West Ham were the next highest with 61,736 fans on average going to the London Stadium in 2024.
Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Liverpool all made the top 20, with the attendance figures increasing throughout the year at Anfield following the completion of the upper tier in the Anfield Road Stand in early 2024.
Top European average attendances in 2024
Italian and German clubs dominated the top 10 with the highest average attendance in 2024. Inter Milan, AC Milan and Roma were fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively, while Dortmund and Bayern were second and third behind River.
Schalke 04, Stuttgart, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburg SV also made the top 20, with an average attendance of 61,438 at Veltins-Arena in 2024. This was despite the fact that the club were competing in 2. Bundesliga for the second time in three seasons.
Top South American average attendances in 2024
The Millionaires topped the list for the highest average attendance in world football in 2024. You had to go down to 21st to find their arch-rivals Boca Juniors in this list. Last year, they had an average attendance of 55,790 at La Bombonera.
Flamengo led the way for Brazilian clubs, with an average attendance of 54,759 at the Maracana in 2024.
