The redevelopment of the historic Estadio Nacional has suffered a sudden setback, with the Portuguese Football Federation issuing an immediate suspension on the project.

The news comes just before the project moved from the preparation to implementation phase, with the suspension issued due to safety concerns and rising costs.

The preparation phase of the Estadio Nacional redevelopment project has been officially halted by the Portuguese Football Federation, who have said that there will now be a full reassessment to examine its assumptions and potential consequences before resuming.

One of the main reasons for the decision is due to safety concerns, following federation authorities pointing out issues that were not included in the winning design proposal, leading to the call for a full reassessment of the project.

There have also been concerns raised regarding the costs of the investment, with the project reportedly needing recalculation and adjustment to current financial realities.

The project is still planned to go ahead, but the federation's decision for a renewed evaluation may lead to changes or a complete redefinition of the plans, while a new timeline has not been presented for the redevelopment.

FGG Says: Historic stadium deserves best-in-class redevelopment

Although the news of the project's suspension will come as a disappointment, the Estadio Nacional is one of the most important and historic sporting venues in Portugal and is fully deserving of the very best redevelopment.

The initial plans were clearly not up to standard, so the decision to fully reassess the project is certainly the right one if the eventual outcome leads to the best-in-class redevelopment of the iconic ground.
