How to get to Porto: Best ways for Man City fans to travel

Manchester City's quest for a second Champions League trophy will begin at the stadium where the club first played in a Champions League final, the Estadio do Dragao.

City's run to the final in 2021 saw them ultimately lose to Chelsea in Porto, so the travelling Blues will be hoping for a better experience this time around.

City's clash with Porto will take place on Tuesday, 8 September, and given the quick turnaround between the draw being made and the first round of fixtures, supporters don't have much time to book their transport and accommodation.

How to get to Porto: Options for Manchester City fans ahead of Champions League clash

Quickest route

With the match scheduled for Tuesday, 8 September, the quickest way to experience Porto away is to get a flight out of Manchester Airport directly to Porto on Monday, 7 September before making the return trip on Wednesday, 9 September.

However, with no flights scheduled from Manchester to Porto on the Monday, the next best option is to fly out on the Sunday instead. Return flights going out on the Sunday and returning on the Wednesday are currently priced at £351.

To make the Monday to Wednesday trip possible, City fans can fly out of London for £66 or Newcastle for £80, before returning to Manchester on the Wednesday for £190.

Cheapest route

For the cheapest route to Porto, City fans will need to fly via another European city. One option is to fly to Faro Airport on the Monday, stay over in Faro, and then get a connecting flight to Porto on Tuesday morning. The total cost of this trip is £64 (at the time of writing). Accomodation in Faro will also be cheaper than Porto, which helps with overall costs.

Coming back, fans can either still board the direct flight back to Manchester for £190, or there is a flight to Alicante in the evening, which connects to Manchester the following morning for just £44.

Alternative route

For those who have unlimited time on their hands, there are alternatives to flying. A ferry over to Bilbao or Santander in Northern Spain is a good laugh and lasts around 36 hours. From there, fans can hire a car and drive six hours to Porto, while buses and trains (albeit with several stops) are also available.

The price for direct flights to Porto aren't too bad at present, particularly if you don't mind flying out from Newcastle or London on the Monday. Sometimes, long-winded trips may seem like a good idea at the time, but they can leave you exhausted by the time you actually reach your destination.
