Luis Figo names his two favourite stadiums to play in – and neither is the Bernabeu or Camp Nou

Portuguese football icon Luis Figo has named the two stadiums that left the biggest impression on him during his illustrious playing career.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star surprisingly overlooked both of his former homes when asked about his favourite atmospheres.

Figo was taking part in a short quiz with content creator Sofia Ramirez following a LaLiga and FC27 event in New York City when he was asked about the stadiums and atmospheres that had made the biggest impression on him.

The ex-Portugal star initially admitted it was a difficult question before eventually selecting Liverpool's Anfield when asked which stadium had particularly stood out during his career.

Figo was then asked to name the best stadium in Spain for atmosphere, with the former winger again overlooking the two grounds he knows better than most.

Instead, he opted for Athletic Club's San Mames.

The answer is perhaps unsurprising given San Mames' reputation for its passionate support, while Figo experienced Anfield as an opposition player during his career at both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The former Sporting CP winger spent five years at Barcelona before his controversial move to Real Madrid in 2000.

The transfer made him the first major signing of Florentino Perez's presidency and sparked an extraordinary backlash from Barcelona supporters.

Figo went on to spend another five years at Madrid, meaning he had plenty of experience of both the Camp Nou and Bernabeu before retiring in 2009.

There is something particularly interesting about Figo choosing Anfield and San Mames when he spent the biggest part of his career at Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Those two Spanish giants have two of the most recognisable stadiums in world football, yet neither made the cut when Figo was asked to think about atmosphere.

Perhaps that says something about the lasting impression an intense away atmosphere can leave on a player.

Anfield and San Mames are both famous for their supporters and atmosphere, and Figo clearly remembers that experience more strongly than the familiarity of his former homes.
