Fiorentina's plans to complete the redevelopment of Stadio Artemio Franchi have received a significant boost after Florence City Council declared the club's proposal to be in the public interest.

The decision strengthens the stadium's prospects of being ready for the 2029-30 season and supports Florence's ambitions to host matches at Euro 2032.

City of Florence approve Artemio Franchi funding proposal

The proposal includes a 60-year concession, approximately €101m (£85m) in private investment and a commitment by the future concessionaire to cover management and maintenance costs across the stadium complex.

Around €54m (£47m) of the investment would fund the completion of redevelopment works, while Fiorentina's proposed ‘Wave 3' project would involve final installations, services and commercial spaces, with an estimated cost of €47m (£39m).

The agreement must also protect the stadium's historically significant structures and guarantee public use, including 20 days each year reserved for initiatives promoted by the city.

Florence will now launch a public tender inviting operators to express interest in completing the work and managing the venue.

Mayor Sara Funaro described the declaration of public interest as an important step towards delivering a fully redeveloped stadium for the city and Fiorentina supporters.

Work at the Franchi began in 2024, with Fiorentina continuing to play there at reduced capacity throughout the project.

The first phase, including improvements to the Curva Fiesole and sections of the Maratona and Tribuna, is expected to finish by the end of April 2027.

The second phase will then focus on the southern part of the stadium, including the Curva Ferrovia, with completion targeted for 2029.

The wider project is intended to leave the ground ready for the 2029-30 campaign and strengthen Florence's position in the selection of Euro 2032 host venues.

FGG says: Artemio Franchi decision brings Fiorentina closer to Euro 2032 goal

The declaration of public interest is an important milestone because it gives the redevelopment a clearer financial and administrative direction.

However, the decision is not the same as finishing the work, and the tender process and construction timetable will remain crucial.

With Euro 2032 on the horizon, completing the Franchi by 2029 would put Florence in a stronger position to pursue its hosting ambitions while giving the club a modernised home.
