Manchester United have taken another step towards their proposed 100,000-capacity new stadium after officially appointing its architects.

Foster + Partners will now lead the design phase of the huge project, bringing the club closer to turning its long-term vision into reality.

Foster + Partners have officially been appointed as the architects for Manchester United's proposed new stadium, with the club now moving into the design phase of the project, per the Daily Mail.

The practice, led by Lord Norman Foster, has been closely involved with the plans for the proposed 100,000-seater ‘Wembley of the North', with the concept first publicly unveiled at its headquarters in March 2025.

United previously faced questions over why an open tender had not been held to appoint an architect.

At the time, the club said a formal process was underway and would be completed following appropriate due diligence and in line with its governance policies.

That process has now concluded, with Foster + Partners emerging as United's chosen architects.

The club told its fans' forum that “the focus now shifts to the design phase of the new stadium in partnership with Foster + Partners”, marking a significant progression from the conceptual stage towards developing the detailed plans.

The proposed stadium would be part of a wider redevelopment of the area around Old Trafford and is expected to cost around £2 billion.

This is another important box ticked for United.

Appointing the architects means the project can properly move into its design phase, taking the proposed 100,000-seater from an ambitious concept towards something that can eventually be built.

There is obviously still a long road ahead before construction begins, but this is certainly a positive step.
