Real Betis are facing another extended spell away from their historic home after further complications surrounding the redevelopment of Estadio Benito Villamarin.

The club are now targeting a return ahead of the 2029/30 season, with negotiations over the next construction phase pushing the project further back.

Real Betis faces another delay in Estadio Benito Villamarin return

Work at the Benito Villamarin began in summer 2025 with the demolition of part of the stadium, initially carrying an expected completion date of 2027.

That target was subsequently moved to 2028, but prolonged negotiations with contractor Acciona have now placed the next phase of construction in doubt.

The second phase was originally expected to be agreed in July 2026, although discussions are still ongoing. Talks are reportedly approaching their conclusion, with construction work now expected to get underway in 2027.

Club president Angel Haro has sought to reassure supporters, confirming via El Desmarque, that the collaborative process is in its final stages and promising to provide further details at the next General Shareholders' Meeting.

He has also stressed that the priority is delivering a stadium that generates sufficient income to support Betis' ambitions, rather than simply providing a comfortable home.

Meanwhile, Estadio La Cartuja will continue to be the club's temporary home, potentially until summer 2029.

Betis have adapted well to the larger venue, with attendances regularly reaching 65,000 to 70,000 and season-ticket numbers increasing from 50,741 to 57,650.

However, the extended stay brings additional complications, with La Cartuja also expected to undergo improvements ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

FGG says: Another delay will test the patience of Betis supporters

The prospect of spending another few seasons away from the Benito Villamarin will undoubtedly frustrate Beticos supporters, particularly after the original redevelopment timetable has already been pushed back several times.

There are positives to playing at La Cartuja, especially the increased capacity and additional matchday revenue, but it cannot fully replace the identity and atmosphere of Betis' traditional home.

Haro's latest comments suggest the club remain committed to returning, but supporters will want to see the next construction phase finally begin in 2027.
