Newcastle United could move away from St James' Park in the future, though Saudi-backed owners PIF are yet to make a decision on whether to expand the current stadium or move to a new site.

The nearby Leazes Park has emerged as the preferred location, should the Magpies choose to leave their home of 120 years.

Beyond the increased capacity and modern facilities, a new ground could see the North East giants significantly boost their commercial power, and subsequently, their finances.

How much could Newcastle United earn from new stadium naming rights?

According to a recent report from The Sponsor, a new purpose-built Newcastle stadium could see them earn in excess of £100 million.

That would be done through the sale of its naming rights, as they could expect around £9.9million per year over a 10-year period.

By comparison, selling the naming rights to St James' Park – which was once known as the Sports Direct Arena under former chairman Mike Ashley – would be estimated to bring in roughly half that at £5.5 million per year.

While the iconic ground has strong global recognition, its ageing infrastructure limits its commercial potential.

Sean Connell, editor of The Sponsor, explained that St James' Park sits in an “awkward middle ground” because it is “lacking” the heritage appeal of a Twickenham and is also “falling short” of the cutting-edge facilities offered at both the Emirates and the Etihad Stadium.

He does believe, however, a new ground – built to elite standards and paired with regular European football – would see their naming rights value increase “materially.”

FGG says: Why leaving St James' Park will be key to Newcastle's growth

Moving away from one of English football's most historic venues would be a hugely emotional decision, especially for the Magpies' faithful, but it may be a necessary one if Newcastle are to compete financially with Europe's heavyweights.

Currently, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium leads the UK market at £12.6 million per year, behind only the Bernabeu, the Spotify Camp Nou and the Allianz Arena globally.

St James' Park sits 30th in the rankings, but a new stadium could see them rise closer to the level of Liverpool's Anfield Stadium at £10million per year.

With Everton already reaping the benefits of their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, Newcastle owners PIF face an era-defining choice.

A modern, multi-use venue could totally transform their long-term commercial outlook, and the potential naming rights figures show just how much is at stake.
