Tottenham Hotspur’s new managerial appointment is already facing significant backlash, with criticism coming from the club’s most influential supporter group.

Tottenham hiring Roberto De Zerbi slammed by supporters representatives

Spurs fans have voiced strong opposition to the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi following an “emergency meeting” by the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust.

The Trust has formally contacted the club to state that it cannot support the decision, citing a wave of complaints from fans in recent days, as per the BBC.

The backlash centres around comments De Zerbi made while managing Olympique de Marseille regarding Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, who left Manchester United after charges against him were dropped in 2023, was publicly backed by De Zerbi, who said the forward had “paid in a strong way” and described him as “a good lad”.

Those remarks have been widely criticised by fan groups, with some accusing the Italian of downplaying the seriousness of the situation.

Prominent supporter groups and individuals have voiced their concerns, with some fans even stating they will stop attending matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a result of the appointment.

De Zerbi now faces an immediate challenge to win over sections of the fanbase as Spurs battle to maintain their Premier League status.

FGG says: Roberto De Zerbi had enough doubts before football matters were even considered

His past comments and attitude around the aforementioned circumstances are a significant red flag that risks alienating a fanbase that has been through enough this season.

When official supporter groups are holding emergency meetings and formally opposing an appointment, it shows the depth of feeling around this.

And the key issue here goes beyond tactics, style of play, or results.

De Zerbi’s comments on Greenwood are enough on their own to make many fans uncomfortable, and that’s not something that can simply be brushed aside once the football starts.

For Tottenham, this creates an immediate disconnect between club and supporters at a time when unity is crucial.

Even if De Zerbi delivers on the pitch, this situation won’t just disappear, and nor should it.
