Arsenal supporters brought plenty of noise and humour to Madrid ahead of their huge European clash on Wednesday evening.
With tensions rising before the semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, Gunners fans made sure their rivals weren’t forgotten, even hundreds of miles from north London.
Arsenal fans sing hilarious new chant about Spurs before Atletico Madrid clash
Ahead of the showdown with Atletico Madrid, Arsenal fans were filmed on the streets chanting a tongue-in-cheek song aimed at their arch-rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Supporters sang: “Arsenal in the Champions League… Tottenham in the Football League…”, poking fun at Spurs’ struggles this season and their position in the relegation zone.
The light-hearted chant quickly spread across social media, adding to the pre-match atmosphere as fans gathered across the Spanish capital ahead of the first leg.
On the pitch, the game itself delivered drama too.
Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Julian Alvarez responded in a similar fashion.
A late intervention from VAR denied Eberechi Eze the chance to win it from the spot, leaving the tie finely balanced heading into the second leg.
FGG says: Rivalry never takes a day off, even on the European stage
This is English football culture in a nutshell.
Even with a Champions League semi-final on the horizon, Arsenal fans still found time to aim a dig at Spurs, and you can be sure that the reverse would happen if roles were flipped.
It’s part of what makes rivalries like this so compelling. There's humour and needle, and often constant back-and-forth between fans, even when they are in different countries.
For the Gunners faithful, it could also be a sign of confidence, though it's easy to see why, considering they are having a much better season than their arch-rivals.
