Wrexham Stadium expansion architects have spoken about their plans for the Kop Stand improvements as the club plans to move forward.
At the start of 2025, Wrexham finally got the news they wanted: Stadium plans had been approved, and work could begin.
Architects Populous were appointed in October 2024, with a new, more ambitious plan now set to be put into motion.
Wrexham Stadium expansion: A big project
The recent Wrexham club advisory board meeting revealed plans for two more phases in the coming years, with the Wrexham Lager Stand, which has a capacity of 4,200, being prioritised for development.
These newly revised plans were approved by the local council, with Wrexham able to move on with the project under the leadership of the Populous group.
Speaking to the Athletic, Declan Sharkey, global director and senior principal at Populous, was full of praise for the club.
“I genuinely believe this design would only work in Wrexham. It wouldn’t work anywhere else in the world. This is truly of Wrexham. One quote really resonated with me throughout this design process. It was something Rob McElhenney said, which was basically how ‘everything we do will have to represent the ethos of the town’. By that, he talked about hardworking, humble, friendly, inspirational, beautiful. That quote really started to drive our design. What you see, when looking at the materiality, will immediately speak of Wrexham.”
While Wrexham currently find themselves in League One, that could change very soon. On that, Sharkey continued: “As a League One stadium, which it is at the moment, the atmosphere is incredible. But what the new stand will do is lift that up a couple of notches again.”
Populous is becoming a regular name around the football world these days. Having built the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, working on a new Newcastle United training facility, and now working with Wrexham. The US-based firm has become the go-to for major stadium projects for the top clubs in Europe, and based on their results, you can see why.
With Newcastle United and Manchester United the next clubs likely to follow Wrexham and Everton in new stadium projects, Populous could well be in for a busy few years.
FGG says: Positive talk for Wrexham Stadium expansion
For Wrexham fans, this is obviously just all talk. However, it's positive to hear from the team building the upgrades. Populous has done great work in recent years, and with Wrexham, they can continue that legacy.
For Wrexham, this is just more positive news in their recent history, as they begin their climb to the top of the English football ladder.
