The 2030 World Cup will be unlike any before it, with matches taking place across six countries and three continents.
While Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will host the opening celebrations, the bulk of the tournament will be staged in Spain, Portugal and Morocco during the height of the European summer.
With temperatures regularly climbing above 30°C – and often exceeding 34°C – in parts of Spain, Portugal and Morocco, many supporters are already wondering whether the host stadiums will feature air conditioning.
Which 2030 World Cup stadiums will have air conditioning?
The short answer is: very few, if any.
Unlike the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where every stadium featured purpose‑built cooling technology and three venues at the recent 2026 tournament already had similar systems, the 2030 World Cup will rely on existing club stadiums across Europe, Africa and South America.
Most of the 23 proposed venues are traditional open-air stadiums and do not feature stadium-wide climate control.
The one notable exception right now is Real Madrid's Bernabeu.
Following its extensive redevelopment, the stadium now features a retractable roof that allows it to operate as a fully climate‑controlled indoor venue when closed.
Whether it will be permitted to shut during the tournament remains unclear, but the capability gives it a unique advantage over every other stadium expected to host matches in 2030.
Elsewhere, venues including Camp Nou, San Mames, Estadio da Luz, the Grand Stade Hassan II and the Estadio Monumental may offer shaded seating in certain areas, but none are expected to provide full air-conditioning throughout the stadium.
Instead, FIFA is likely to rely on scheduling, medical protocols and cooling measures rather than expensive stadium-wide air-conditioning systems.

Will there be hydration breaks at the 2030 World Cup?
As a result, hydration breaks are likely to remain an important part of the tournament.
FIFA already allows mandatory cooling breaks when temperatures reach a set threshold, and that protocol has become increasingly common at major international competitions.
Given many matches in Spain, Portugal and Morocco could be played in temperatures above 30°C, cooling breaks are likely to feature regularly, particularly during afternoon kick-offs.
FIFA could also reduce the number of matches played during the hottest part of the day by scheduling more fixtures in the evening, while host cities will be expected to provide shaded fan zones, water stations and other heat-mitigation measures for supporters.
Although the 2030 World Cup will not replicate Qatar's fully air-conditioned stadium experience, the combination of modern stadium design, revised kick-off schedules and established heat protocols should help players and fans cope with the summer conditions.
