AS Roma's proposed new stadium in Pietralata is facing fresh uncertainty after a European Parliament member called for checks into its compliance with EU law.

However, no formal EU investigation has been launched, and the project has not been suspended despite concerns over procurement procedures and environmental protections.

Pietralata Stadium project back under the microscope in Rome

Dario Tamburrano, a Member of the European Parliament affiliated with Italy's Five Star Movement and The Left group, has challenged the procedures surrounding Roma's proposed new home.

His concerns centre on public procurement regulations and the potential impact of the development on protected areas covered by the EU's Natura 2000 network.

As per reports in Italy, Tamburrano has questioned whether sufficient environmental assessment has been carried out to establish the potential effects of the stadium and associated infrastructure on protected sites in and around Rome.

He has written to several Italian authorities, including the Lazio regional president, Rome's mayor, the special commissioner and the Italian National Anti-Corruption Authority, requesting checks into whether the procedures comply with EU legislation.

He has also called for the possibility of withdrawing existing approvals to be considered if violations are identified.

The challenge follows a favourable opinion issued by the conference of services on September 28, representing an important step in the lengthy administrative process behind the Pietralata development.

Roma's stadium plans have already faced disputes and delays, and the latest intervention introduces another potential complication.

However, the request for a review does not itself establish that any rules have been breached, nor does it mean that EU institutions have opened formal proceedings.

The latest challenge adds another layer of uncertainty to a project that has already taken considerable time to progress.

However, it is important to distinguish a request for scrutiny from a formal investigation or a decision to halt the project. Neither has been confirmed in this case.

Roma's priority will be securing clarity from the relevant authorities and demonstrating that the necessary procedures have been followed. Until further findings emerge, the impact on the stadium's timetable remains uncertain.
