Atletico Madrid have outlined fresh details of their plans to transform the area surrounding the Riyadh Air Metropolitano into a major sports and leisure destination.
The Ciudad del Deporte development will include a new training centre, a 5,500-capacity mini-stadium and improved transport links, with key facilities targeted for completion ahead of the 2027 Champions League final.
Inside Atletico's plans to expand the area around Metropolitano Stadium
Club executive Oscar Mayo has outlined the latest timetable for Ciudad del Deporte, which is being developed next to the Metropolitano.
Several facilities, including public sports areas, an artificial surfing wave pool, golf facilities and a major car park, are expected to open before the Champions League final in June 2027.
Most of the remaining development is scheduled for completion by the end of that year, although a multipurpose complex for major music events is not expected until 2030.
The centrepiece will be a high-performance training complex featuring six pitches, including one surrounded by a mini-stadium with more than 5,500 seats.
Atletico Madrileno, the women's first team and the club's oldest youth side will use the venue for matches, while the wider centre will house gyms, video analysis rooms, offices and dining facilities.
The men's first team is expected to move its training base from Majadahonda to the new complex in summer 2027. Meanwhile, Atletico's women's teams are set to use the Alcala facilities, with Majadahonda remaining the base for other academy sides.
Transport improvements are also planned. Atletico is discussing a new Cercanías commuter rail station with infrastructure manager ADIF and public authorities, although delivery could take two to three years.
A connecting pedestrian bridge is also planned, while a new eastern exit at the Metropolitano metro station is expected towards the end of the 2026-27 season.

FGG says: Atletico's stadium ambitions extend far beyond matchdays
Ciudad del Deporte could significantly strengthen Atletico's infrastructure, giving its first team, academy and women's side dedicated facilities while creating new attractions for visitors throughout the week.
However, transport will be crucial to the project's success. A new rail station could take years to deliver, and existing road congestion needs addressing as the surrounding area becomes busier.
If Atletico can coordinate the development with better access, the Metropolitano could become a destination in its own right rather than simply a stadium that football fans only visit on matchdays.
