Boston United release statement on stadium fire incident after fans evacuated from new stand

Boston United have released a statement after Wealdstone supporters were evacuated from the brand new South Stand at the Jakemans Community Stadium following reports of a fire.

The incident happened shortly before Saturday's National League fixture, with supporters in the away section forced to leave the new stand.

Boston clarify incident

The incident caused some concern, particularly as the South Stand was being used for the first time, but Boston have now clarified that there was no damage and the stand will remain in use.

“Boston United would like to commend the understanding of Wealdstone fans attending Saturday’s encounter at the Jakemans Community Stadium,” the club said in a statement.

“A pre-match incident in the concourse kitchen of the new South Stand forced the evacuation of the away area – although all supporters were re-admitted to the East Stand in time for kick-off.

“The Wealdstone fans were a credit to their club.

“The kitchen did not suffer any damage, and the South Stand will be in operation for the Woking fixture on Tuesday evening.”

The fans were able to return to the stadium before kick off and watched the match without further incident, although they were moved to other areas of the ground.

The game ended as a 3-1 victory for Wealdstone, who came from behind to pick up an important win thanks to goals from Dylan Kadji, Olufela Olomola and Jaydn Mundle-Smith.

Reflecting on the victory, Olomola said: “I said in the changing-room before the game there’ll be moments we’re going to have to suffer – and we did.

“A home team is always going to have a spell of pressure and some chances, you accept that as part of away days.

“Dante’s come up big with the penalty save and we’ve gone and got ourselves a two-goal lead after that.

“Then it’s about sticking together and seeing it through the tough times.”

FGG Says: Serious incident avoided

It is good to hear the incident was not as serious as it could have been, with no serious damage to the new stand.

Boston look to have dealt with the issue swiftly and that must be commended along with the bahviour of the Wealdstone supporters.
