Nottingham MPs back Forest’s “historic” City Ground expansion plans in major new update

Nottingham Forest's ambitious plans to transform the City Ground have received a major show of support from the city's MPs.

The proposed redevelopment would take the stadium's capacity to around 52,500 and could bring significant economic benefits to the area.

City Ground redevelopment finally gets local MPs backing

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, Nottingham North and Kimberley MP Alex Norris and Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood have all issued a joint statement backing Forest's application.

The three Labour MPs described the redevelopment as a “historic opportunity” to preserve Nottingham's football heritage while boosting the local economy and creating well-paid jobs, per the BBC.

Forest submitted plans in January to increase the City Ground's capacity to around 52,500, after previously receiving permission for a smaller expansion to around 35,000 through the redevelopment of the Peter Taylor Stand.

The club has been considering a major expansion since 2019, although the project gained greater momentum following their return to the Premier League in 2022.

Forest have also submitted a transport plan outlining the expected impact of the redevelopment on local roads and had hoped for the plans to be considered this month.

However, a date for the planning meeting has yet to be confirmed. Rushcliffe Borough Council says it is continuing to work with the club to arrange an extraordinary committee meeting to review the proposals.

The MPs believe a larger stadium would also allow Forest to host major international fixtures while giving more local supporters the opportunity to attend matches.

Having all three Nottingham MPs publicly backing the plans is another positive step for Forest as they wait for the council to consider the application.

The proposed increase in capacity would be a major change, but the club has clearly been building towards this for several years.

The next important step is now getting a date for the planning committee and seeing how the application progresses through the process.

There is still a way to go before the work can begin, but with strong political support and Forest continuing to push the project forward, the City Ground redevelopment is certainly gathering momentum.
