The 2026 World Cup promised record-breaking crowds, and the second round of group-stage fixtures continued that trend.
According to our 2026 World Cup attendance tracker, the highest-attended match of Matchday 2 was Norway's dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal at the New York New Jersey Stadium, better known at MetLife Stadium, on June 22nd.
The official attendance of 80,663 matched the venue's full capacity and ranks among the largest crowds recorded at the tournament so far.
It also ensured that the World Cup final venue maintained its place near the top of the competition's attendance rankings.
Another full house at New York New Jersey Stadium
The figure comes as little surprise, given the size of the stadium and the growing interest surrounding both teams.
Norway arrived needing a positive result to secure progression to the knockout rounds, while Senegal were chasing their first points of the tournament. The stakes helped generate another sell-out crowd at one of the tournament's largest U.S. venues.
Those in attendance certainly witnessed an entertaining encounter.
Marcus Pedersen capitalised on a Kalidou Koulibaly error to give Norway the lead before Erling Haaland doubled the advantage shortly after half-time.
Ismaila Sarr pulled one back for Senegal, but Haaland quickly restored Norway's two-goal cushion with his second goal of the evening.
Sarr struck again late on to set up a nervy finish, though Senegal were unable to find an equaliser as Norway secured their place in the last 32.

Norway vs Senegal not the only sell-out during Matchday 2
While Norway vs Senegal recorded the biggest crowd of the second round, it was far from the only match to attract a capacity audience.
Portugal vs Uzbekistan and the Netherlands vs Sweden both drew 68,777 fans at NRG Stadium, while the USA vs Australia filled Lumen Field with 66,925 supporters.
Several other fixtures across North America also reported attendances at or extremely close to 100% of capacity.
