World Cup 2026 host city pursuing two more World Cups after stadium success

The 2026 World Cup may have only wrapped up last weekend, but one of the stadiums that played host to matches in North America this summer is already reportedly eyeing up to two more huge sporting events.

Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, hosted six matches at the World Cup this summer, including Argentina's dramatic quarter-final victory over Switzerland, which went deep into extra time.

Now, the Kansas City Mayor, Quinton Lucas, has gone on record to say he wants the stadium to play a part in the 2031 Women's World Cup and the 2031 Men's Rugby World Cup.

Kansas City to host Rugby World Cup matches?

According to Lucas, Kansas City ‘knocked it out of the park' as World Cup hosts this summer, which puts the city in a strong position to be selected as hosts for both the Women's World Cup and Men's Rugby World Cup in 2031.

Hosting rights for the Women's World Cup are being shared between the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica, while the Rugby World Cup is being held in the USA exclusively.

The US Soccer Federation has already listed Arrowhead Stadium as a potential host venue for the Women's World Cup, while the smaller CPKC Stadium, also in Kansas City, has also been suggested.

Speaking about the World Cup and the city's future on KCUR's Up To Date, Mayor Lucas said:

“I think it’s a nine out of 10 at least in terms of, ‘Did we hit our goals to brand Kansas City, to build something really memorable?' And we sure did.

“It (2031) would be a great year for us. I think it could be a great moment for Kansas City. We proved that we are better at pulling off events than anywhere else.

One interesting side note is that by the time 2031 comes around, the Kansas City Chiefs will no longer play home matches at Arrowhead as they plan to move into a new stadium in the coming years.

The design of Arrowhead, with its wing-like stands, makes it stand out from the crowd among US stadiums. It has also gained icon status in recent years due to the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty in the NFL and the love story between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. At this point, it would be surprising if the stadium wasn't used for both the Women's World Cup and the Men's Rugby World Cup.
