Steven Gerrard is regarded as one of the greatest players to ever play for Liverpool. Over a span of 17 years, Gerrard made more than 700 appearances for his boyhood club, winning the Champions League and multiple domestic cups along the way.

From the minute he broke into the first team from the academy, the Liverpool faithful fell in love with him, and you can hardly blame them. Not only was he a local lad with bags of energy, but he quality and passion to match.

It didn't take long after making his debut at Anfield for Gerrard to get his very own Liverpool chant, one that is still sung in the Kop today. For all the key information on the chant, including the lyrics, we have you covered below.

Steven Gerrard chant, lyrics and tune

The Steven Gerrard chant is sung to the tune of ‘Que Sera Sera' by Doris Day. The lyrics are as follows:

Steve Gerrard, Gerrard

He'll pass the ball 40 yards,

He's big, and he's f***ing hard,

Steve Gerrard, Gerrard

Steven Gerrard chant background

The Steven Gerrard chant does a good job of summarising why Liverpool fans loved/love him so much. Yes, he can ping a ball 40 yards with incredible accuracy, but he is also big and up for a scrap in the middle of the park.

Up until 2005, Liverpool fans were able to sing this chant loud and proud; however, that summer, things took a turn. The player infamously went public with his desire to leave Liverpool after a series of bids from Chelsea. Although he ended up staying, Everton and Man Utd fans created their own version of the chant, which went as follows:

Steve Gerrard, Gerrard

He kisses the badge on his chest,

Then hands in a transfer request,

Steve Gerrard, Gerrard

This wasn't the only alternative version of the chant created by rival fans. Fast forward to 2014, and Liverpool were on course to win the Premier League title for the first time in over 20 years. However, in a huge match against Chelsea, Gerrard slipped on the ball, and Demba Ba picked up the pieces to put Chelsea ahead. Shortly after, the following chant was created:

Steve Gerrard, Gerrard

He slipped on his f***ng a**e

And gave it to Demba Ba,

Steve Gerrard, Gerrard

FGG says: An iconic chant for an iconic player

The Steven Gerrard chant is iconic, no matter how you look at it. On one hand, it's a Kop classic that has been sung for three decades at Anfield. On the other, it is the source material for two of the best ‘p**s taking' chants in English football.
