Manchester United fans will embark on their first European away match of the season this week, with the Red Devils set to take on Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

After a year out of Europe, it's a match that many match-going United fans have been looking forward to for some time, but just how much is the trip costing, on average?

Below, FootballGroundGuide has the answers.

Trip cost breakdown

Manchester airport travel£25
Total£772

Atletico vs Man United away day cost breakdown

Madrid is one of the most accessible cities from the United Kingdom, but that doesn't make this trip a cheap one. In fact, there is no such thing as a cheap trip abroad anymore, particularly when football is involved. Our calculations suggest this trip is costing the average Man Utd fan £772, with the full breakdown below.

Ticket

The match ticket is priced at €50, which translates to around £42. This is the maximum clubs can charge away fans in the Champions League, as per UEFA guidelines.

Travel

Current return flights between Manchester and Madrid from Monday, 12 October to Wednesday, 14 October are north of £400. However, it would be disingenuous to say that's how much Man Utd fans are paying to get to the Spanish capital and back this week.

Those quick off the mark when the fixtures were released were able to snag return flights for under £150, while those who left it a little later were looking more at the £200 mark.

The average Man Utd fan has likely paid around £180 for return flights, which isn't too bad for a European away match.

Beyond flight costs, fans also need to factor in travel costs around Madrid and to and from Manchester Airport. On average, this will total around £40.

Accommodation

Again, the average nightly price for a hotel in Madrid is now around £150 per night. However, those who booked in advance were able to get a room for around £80 per night. On average, Man Utd fans are paying £200 for two nights in Madrid.

Food/drink

European away days can very quickly become expensive, regardless of whether you spend the entire trip in bars and restaurants or if you go and sample some local culture. Three meals are required each day, and that alone will cost £50 per day. When you add on drinks on top, you are looking at around £100 per day. Over three days, this totals £300.
