Celta Vigo will be unable to open the fully redeveloped Gol Stand in time for January's eagerly anticipated Galician derby against Deportivo A Coruna.

Changes designed to increase Balaidos' capacity ahead of the 2030 World Cup have pushed back the completion date, although a section of the new stand could still welcome supporters.

Celta Vigo won't have the Gol Stand open for Deportivo derby

The redeveloped Gol Stand at the Balaidos Stadium is now expected to have 7,139 seats, an increase of 721 on the original plans, with the additional capacity intended to strengthen the stadium's prospects of hosting 2030 World Cup matches.

Construction began in January 2025, with the full stand initially scheduled to reopen for the much-anticipated clash against Deportivo on January 3rd.

However, the expanded design has created additional work involving electrical installations, paving and emergency facilities, delaying the full opening by at least a month.

Celta are nevertheless hoping to make approximately 3,400 seats in the Gol Baixo section available for the derby, which would take the stadium's capacity to around 26,000 for the first meeting with Deportivo since 2018.

The changes will increase the overall redevelopment cost by €600k (£500k), taking the total to €25.4m (£21.4m).

Elsewhere, the Pontevedra Provincial Council has allocated €250k (£215k) towards preparing the technical project for the proposed expansion of the Tribuna Stand, estimated to cost €107m (£92m).

Work has also reached an important milestone with the installation of the final section of the new roof-supporting mesh, while distinctive sky-blue cladding is being added around much of the stadium.

FIFA representatives are expected to visit Vigo in November or December as part of inspections for the 2030 World Cup, with Balaídos hoping to secure a place among the tournament's host venues.

FGG says: Balaidos' World Cup ambitions have come at a cost

The delay will disappoint Celta supporters hoping to see the completed Gol Stand for such a significant derby, but the additional capacity could prove valuable in the longer term.

Balaidos is clearly being upgraded with the 2030 World Cup in mind, and the prospect of hosting matches would represent a major achievement for Vigo.

However, the stadium must deliver a better experience for Celta supporters in the meantime, rather than allowing the World Cup project to become the sole focus of its redevelopment.
