Chobani Stadium set for major expansion after Fenerbahce approval

Fenerbahce have approved a major expansion project for its Chobani Stadium, also known as Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

The project is seeking to increase the capacity from 47,91 to around 64,000, and the club have stated this will help raise their revenue-generating potential by around £21.4m per year.

Fenerbahce first revealed plans to expand the Chobani Stadium in April 2025, with the intention of raising the venue's capacity from 47,911 to beyond 60,000.

These plans were reinforced by president Aziz Yildirim during his election campaign and have now been confirmed.

The project, which will begin as soon as the necessary permits are completed, will involve major changes to the stadium's architectural structure, including raising the stadium's roof by approximately six metres using special jacks.

New seats will then be added behind the goalposts, with further seats added to the existing Maraton and Fenerium stands, while 52 additional private boxes are also planned for construction.

Finally, the project intends to add exterior cladding to the stadium, with the club aiming to ensure “perfect acoustics within our sacred ground.”

Fenerbahce are intending to continue playing at their home matches during the construction phase of the project, although board member Nihat Ozbagi admitted that the club would likely have to “play a few matches in another stadium while the roof is being raised.”

Ozbagi added that “the construction period is12 months according to the work schedule. We aim to bring it to a certain level by the end of the season. The approximate cost of the construction is €50m (£42.8m).”

The Chobani Stadium is already a difficult destination for European sides, with Fenerbahce's passionate home fans able to create an unbelievably hostile atmosphere, and increasing the capacity will only make this an even harder venue to vist.
