City Ground expansion update as Nottingham Forest now given date for crucial decision meeting

Nottingham Forest have been given a date for the crucial planning decision on their major City Ground redevelopment plans.

The club's proposals to increase capacity to 52,500 will be considered later this month.

Rushcliffe Borough Council's planning committee will consider Nottingham Forest's applications at a meeting on Wednesday, September 16th, with the session scheduled to begin at 6pm.

The council's planning officers have recommended approval, subject to conditions, while a draft agreement published in August also indicated that permission could be granted on the date.

Forest's latest plans, unveiled in December 2025, would increase the City Ground's capacity from around 30,000 seats to 52,500.

The first phase would take capacity to 45,000 through an extended Peter Taylor Stand and additional seating in both Trent End corners.

A further expansion of the Brian Clough Stand would then take the stadium to its eventual 52,500 capacity, although that element currently has outline planning permission and would require further approval.

The overall project is expected to be completed by 2033 if it proceeds, but matchday transport remains an important issue. Forest have indicated that no expansion will take place until there is a clear plan for managing increased crowd movements, with a new river crossing among the possibilities being considered.

Local MPs have backed the proposals, while more than 1,200 supporters have reportedly written to Rushcliffe in support. The club has also enjoyed six consecutive seasons of sold-out matches, strengthening the argument for additional capacity.
