Could Camp Nou workers’ strike cancel El Clasico?

Barcelona have insisted that Sunday's El Clasico against Real Madrid will go ahead as planned, despite a three-day strike by around 60 of the club's permanent seasonal employees coinciding with the fixture at Spotify Camp Nou.

The industrial action began at midnight on Friday, October 23, and is scheduled to continue until 06:00 on Monday, October 26.

With Barcelona due to host their biggest domestic rivals at 21:00 local time on Sunday, the timing has raised questions about whether the club can maintain normal matchday operations. However, Barcelona have assured supporters that the game will not be disrupted.

The dispute also affects other events across the club's facilities, including fixtures at Estadi Johan Cruyff and Palau Blaugrana.

Barcelona say they have sufficient organisational capacity to deal with potential issues and deliver the scheduled programme.

Why are Barcelona workers striking during El Clasico?

The walkout involves approximately 60 permanent seasonal workers who say their working conditions have deteriorated.

Their concerns include staffing shortages, alleged contractual irregularities, unequal treatment within the club and the outsourcing of services previously handled by employees.

The workers argue that their numbers have fallen while the demands of staging sporting events remain substantial. Reports in Spain indicate that the group wants its workforce increased to around 90 employees to meet operational needs.

Their responsibilities cover aspects of matchday logistics and supporter services, making the dispute particularly sensitive ahead of a fixture that attracts huge crowds and requires extensive coordination throughout the stadium.

Mediation at the Catalonia Labour Court failed to produce an agreement on Thursday, October 22, leaving the strike in place.

The workers have maintained that they want concrete commitments from the club on their concerns, while Barcelona have defended their ability to organise events during the industrial action.

Barcelona insist El Clasico will go ahead as planned

Despite the unresolved dispute, Barcelona have maintained that the strike will not prevent Sunday's match from taking place. The club has also said that its other scheduled sporting events will proceed normally.

These include Barcelona's women's team hosting Granada at Estadi Johan Cruyff, as well as basketball and handball fixtures at Palau Blaugrana. Youth-team matches at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper are also expected to go ahead.

The immediate priority is to ensure that staffing arrangements can accommodate supporters and the operational demands of El Clasico without compromising the event.

The club has expressed confidence in its ability to manage potential incidents, although the workers' concerns remain unresolved.

FGG Says: The strike is a warning for Barcelona, not a reason to expect postponement

Barcelona's assurances suggest that a cancellation is not expected, but the dispute highlights the workforce pressures behind the running of a major stadium.

With the strike continuing through the El Clasico weekend, the club must demonstrate that its contingency arrangements can deliver the matchday operation it has promised.

Even if Sunday's fixture passes without disruption, the disagreement over staffing and working conditions will remain. Reaching a lasting agreement with the affected employees will be important if Barcelona are to avoid further industrial action around future events.
