The 2025/26 English football season has now officially begun, which means thousands of people across the United Kingdom now have their favourite hobby back – travelling the country with their mates watching their favourite football teams.
Matchgoing supporters often welcome the summer break, as it's an opportunity to have a rest and forget about the negative side of football, but in August, we're all ready to do it all again.
Depending on your viewpoint, long away days can either be the best or worst of the season. On one hand, it's a pilgrimage across the country with your mates, but on the other, the journey home can be miserable if your team loses the match.
Which set of supporters will make the longest away trip this season, and where will they be going? Let's take a look.

Longest away trips in English football 2025-26: By division
Newcastle to Bournemouth – 695-mile round trip
The longest away trip in the Premier League season is the 695-mile round trip that supporters of Bournemouth and Newcastle will make.
Newcastle will travel down from the North East to the South Coast quite early in the season on 20 September. The weather should still be quite good down south at that time of the year, meaning the travelling Geordies could be in for a good day out.
The return fixture will take place towards the end of the season on 18 April. The travelling Cherries will be hoping that their trip to Newcastle will be as good as it was last year, when their team stunned the Magpies with a 4-1 triumph at St James' Park.
Portsmouth to Middlesbrough – 620-mile round trip
Fans of Portsmouth and Middlesbrough will enjoy the longest away day in the Championship this season.
Portsmouth will host Middlesbrough on 4 October before the reverse fixture takes place at the Riverside Stadium on 11 April. How Pompey are faring at that stage of the season could determine how many fans decide to embark on the long trip up to the north east.
Last season, the teams played out a 2-2 draw at the Riverside early on in the season before Portsmouth recorded a 2-1 victory on home soil in January.
Bradford to Plymouth – 650-mile round trip
The longest away day in League One this season is a new fixture, as last season, Bradford and Plymouth were competing in different divisions. Bradford secured promotion from League Two, and Plymouth were relegated from the Championship.
Both sets of supporters tend to travel well, and Plymouth fans, in particular, are more than used to long away trips given their geographical position in the United Kingdom.
Crawley to Barrow – 650-mile round trip
Crawley and Barrow supporters will embark on the longest away trips in League Two this season, with both sets of supporters set to take on a 650-mile round trip this season.
Crawley will make the long journey up north in January, typically the wettest and coldest month of the year in this part of the country, which will make this a real test of character for all Crawley fans who make the trip.
Barrow fans will travel to Crawley at the end of September.
