When the Saints go marching in

The most recognisable Southampton chant and the obvious starting point for this article is ‘When the Saints go marching in'. You may have also heard a very similar tune sung at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Southampton fans are adamant their version came first.

There are two versions of this famous song, with the lyrics of each changing ever so slightly depending on whether the fans are signing the fast or slow version of the chant. The lyrics for both are as follows:

Fast version

Oh when the Saints,
Oh when the Saints,
Go marching in,
Go marching in,
Oh when the Saints go marching in,
I want to be in that number,
Oh when the Saints go marching in…

Slow version

Oh when the Saints, go marching in,
Oh when the Saints go marching in,
I want to be in that number,
Oh when the Saints go marching in…

Hello we are Southampton Boys

The fierce rivalry that exists between Southampton and Portsmouth is well-documented and there is almost an endless list of Saints chants aimed at their most bitter rivals – many of which are fairly explicit.

While songs of this nature are used mainly when playing Portsmouth, as every fan knows, there is always an opportunity to take some shots at your rivals in every game.

‘Hello we are Southampton Boys' is possibly the most famous of the lot and the official lyrics of the tune are as follows:

Hello! Hello!
Hello! Hello!
We are the Southampton boys.

Hello! Hello!
We are the Southampton boys,
And if you are a Portsmouth fan,
Surrender or you'll d**,
We all follow Southampton!

Bye Bye Pompey

As mentioned, many of the famous Southampton chants are aimed at their fierce rivals Portsmouth, and this chant, as you can probably tell by the name, is another one of those songs.

However, this one is far simpler in nature and therefore much easier to learn, and because of that, often gets sung more often than ‘Hello we are Southampton Boys' during matches.

The official lyrics of ‘Bye Bye Pompey' are as follows:

Bye, bye Pompey,
Pompey, bye bye,
Bye, bye Pompey,
Pompey, bye bye…

Southampton 'till I die

You will likely know the lyrics and the tune of this song from the title alone as it has been adopted by many clubs all over the United Kingdom and for national teams too.

It is unlikely to win any creativity awards, but it scores a definite A for effectiveness.

Used to cultivate togetherness among players and fans alike, the official lyrics to this tune are:

Southampton till I die,
I'm Southampton till I die,
I know I am I'm sure I am,
I'm Southampton till I die…

All Southampton

The final Southampton chant on this list is ‘All Southampton', which again, is not all that unique to the Seaside club and can be heard at most grounds up and down the country.

A song used to inspire, albeit using tongue-in-cheek lyrics, the words you will need to know in order to belt this one out from the St.Mary's terraces are as follows:

And it's all Southampton,
All Southampton FC,
We're by far the greatest team,
The world has ever seen…
