Rome is preparing a major transformation of the historic Stadio Olimpico as the Italian capital bids to host the Euro 2032 final.

The ambitious project will modernise the venue, increase capacity and ensure the Olimpico remains central to Rome's sporting ambitions despite AS Roma's plans for a new stadium.

The project, unveiled by Sport e Salute in partnership with the FIGC and the UEFA Euro 2032 Commissioner's Office, represents the biggest overhaul of the Olimpico since its major refurbishment for the 1990 World Cup.

According to reports in Italy, work is scheduled to begin in summer 2027 and finish by 2030, with capacity increasing from just over 60,000 to 70,000.

The plans include reorganised entrances, improved accessibility and visibility, new giant LED screens, hospitality and corporate areas, food and drink facilities, commercial spaces and upgraded technology.

Renewable energy systems will also be introduced, while improvements will extend into the surrounding Foro Italico Park.

The €150m (£128m) redevelopment is specifically designed to bring the stadium up to UEFA standards and strengthen Rome's case to host the Euro 2032 final.

That comes as AS Roma continues to push ahead with its own 60,605-capacity stadium at Pietralata, creating an interesting future for the two venues.

FGG says: Stadio Olimpico still has a major role in Italian football

Roma's planned departure does not necessarily signal the end of the Olimpico's importance.

The stadium has been home to Roma and Lazio since 1953 and remains one of Italy's most recognisable sporting venues.

A modernised 70,000-capacity Olimpico could instead become an even more important national venue, hosting major football, sporting and entertainment events while Roma establishes its own home at Pietralata.

With Rome now openly targeting the Euro 2032 final, this revamp shows the Olimpico is not being left behind.
