Manchester United suffered their latest embarrassment on Wednesday night, when they surrendered a two-goal lead in a 3-2 EFL Cup defeat against Brighton, and fans at Old Trafford were not shy about making their feelings known.
Boos rang out around the ground at full-time, and the Red Devils faithful continued their jeering chants towards the team as they headed down the tunnel.
Old Trafford frustrated with Michael Carrick's Man United
Man United was able to secure Champions League football by finishing third in the Premier League last term, but Michael Carrick's side have been far from impressive at the start of 2026-27.
The Red Devils have only won two of their six matches across all competitions this season, beating promoted club Ipswich Town 5-2 in the Premier League, and Champions League debutants Sabah 4-0 on September 10.
That dire record – which includes a shocking 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hull City in their top-flight opener – has left fans feeling that the current campaign is set to bring more of the same disappointment they have become accustomed to in the post-Fergie era.
On Wednesday, 19-year-old Shea Lacey gave United the lead with an excellent strike early in the contest, before Mason Mount doubled the hosts' advantage with just 10 minutes on the clock.
It was expected that Carrick's men would be in control of the third round tie from that point on, but the momentum of the game was entirely reversed, and Brighton eventually found a breakthrough when the Seagulls' own 19-year-old, Charalampos Kostoulas, netted in first-half stoppage time.
The second period continued in the same fashion, with Pascal Gross levelling the clash around an hour in, and when Maxim De Cuyper bagged the visitors' third, United were unable to recover.
In response to their humiliating loss against Brighton, fans were heard belting out a chorus of “What the f*** was that?” as the players walked towards the tunnel, making certain that each member of the squad was aware just how unacceptable the capitulation was.

Man United have experienced similar whiplash from season-to-season in the past, and fans will be fearing a repeat of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era.
However, the more positive amongst the supporter base would highlight that the Red Devils were hard done by against Manchester City, and if talisman Bruno Fernandes can continue to deliver, then the club could push for Champions League football once again.
In the aftermath of Wednesday's loss, it would not be a surprise to see United respond with a spirited performance against Fulham on Sunday, hoping to go into the September international break on a positive note.
