Manchester United fans are credited with having one of the biggest and best songbooks in the country, particularly in terms of away support.

Of all the football chants associated with the club, the one that sticks out the most is ‘Glory Glory Man United', which is often played at Old Trafford shortly after the final whistle, at least when the result is a positive one for the club.

But what are the lyrics to this Man Utd chant, and what is the story behind it? Let's find out.

Glory Glory Man United chant, lyrics and tune

Glory Glory Man United is sung to the tune of ‘Blood Upon the Risers' – a song sung during the American Civil War. The lyrics to the chorus are as follows:

Glory Glory Man United,

Glory Glory Man United,

Glory Glory Man United,

As the Reds go marching on, on, on!

Manchester United weren't the first team in English football to use the ‘Glory Glory' tune for a chant. Tottenham are widely considered to be the first club to use it, and Leeds fans were also known to sing it; however, it has become synonymous with Man Utd thanks to the 1983 FA Cup final.

Ahead of the final, Frank Renshaw from a band called Herman's Hermits wrote a full song for Glory Glory Man United. He then took members of Manchester United's first team squad to a music studio to record it, and it ended up reaching #13 in the charts.

Ever since, it has stuck with the fans in the Stretford End and is still sung today, albeit not as often as it once was. In fact, nowadays, Man Utd fans sing a sarcastic version where the lyrics are changed to ‘Who the f**k are Man United?' to wind up opposition fans when their team scores a goal.

FGG says: A chant that divides opinion

There are some Man Utd fans who feel that this chant should be brought back to prominence in the stands at Old Trafford, while there are others who think the club need to stop blaring out of the speakers after matches, considering the current lack of glory at the club.
