Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is an iconic venue on the Italian footballing map, and is the second oldest stadium in the country, after Genoa’s Luigi Ferraris.

Venezia FC to move to new stadium in 2027

Venezia are finally set to wave goodbye to their iconic home ground at the end of the 2026-27 campaign, moving from Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo to a newly-built venue next summer.

The new stadium will offer a major upgrade in terms of both amenities and capacity, and being able to host 18,500 spectators for club matchdays, internationals fixtures, rugby and concerts will bring the Winged Lions a major revenue boost.

The ground – situated in Tessera, just outside Venice – was designed by top architecture firm Populous, and is beginning to take shape, with construction work well underway.

Venezia are famous for the intensity of support shown by their ultras, who are comprised of six main groups, and make the Curva Sud a wall of black, orange and green.

Expect a fantastic atmosphere on matchdays, with plenty of chants ringing around the ground.

Venezia’s ultras often bring out tifos for special occasions, and their flags are a regular sight at Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo.

All areas of the ground offer good sight of the pitch, though seats in the centre of the main stand will naturally give more broad views (for a steeper price).

By Vaporetto (Public Waterbus)

Given that Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is only accessible by water or walking, the easiest way to reach the venue is likely the public waterbus service, known as the vaporetto.

Fans hoping to use the waterbus should take vaporetto line 1, 4.2, 5.2, or 6 to the Sant’Elena stop, which is a short five-minute walk away.

By Water Taxi

An alternative to the vaporetto is a water taxi, but keep in mind that while you will get to the stadium in comfort, a trip will be exorbitantly priced.

On Foot

Walking to a football match might seem tedious in another city, but a scenic stroll through Venice is a fantastic way to reach the stadium.

The Pier Luigi Penzo is around 30 minutes on foot from Piazza San Marco, a path that takes you down the waterfront at Riva degli Schiavoni and by Venice Biennale on the way to Sant’Elena.

Beyond the match itself, visitors will find no shortage of things to do in Venice, a city littered with some of the most iconic landmarks in the world.

Piazza San Marco:

The most famous spot in town, this square is where you will go to fin St. Mark’s Basilica, the Campanile, and the Doge’s Palace. Live orchestras are the soundtrack to nights here, where the grandeur of Venice is at its most concentrated.

If there is one thing that Venice is known for, it is the canals that run through the city, and the Grand Canal – which runs almost 4km – will let you take in the sights. The legendary Rialto Bridge crosses the Grand Canal, and is worth a visit itself, along with the Rialto Market.

Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is the second oldest ground in Italian professional football, and though a move was long overdue, it will be sad to see Venezia finally leave their storied home at the end of 2026-27.

The stadium first opened all the way back in 1913 as a simple wooden structure, but it saw extensive redevelopment in the 1920s, including the construction of a concrete main stand.

As Venezia reached Serie A in 1939, the ground was expanded further, and reached a pinnacle attendance of 26,000 when AC Milan visited in 1966.

Unfortunately, the Pier Luigi Penzo was severely damaged by a tornado in 1970, and due to the club’s decline more broadly, it was only partially repaired, causing the capacity to drop to just over 5,000.

In the late 1990s, Venezia rose through the divisions once again, allowing the stadium’s capacity to be increased to 15,000, though safety restrictions have seen it creep back down in recent years due to a state of disrepair.

The story of Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is one of perseverance and resilience, and it is fitting that Venezia will play their final season at the ground in Serie A, having won the Serie B title in 2025-26 to earn promotion to the top flight.

Venezia contest a number of Veneto derbies against opponents including Padua, Hellas Verona, Vicenza, Treviso, and Chievo.

The 2026-27 edition of Serie A will not feature any of those opponents, given that Hellas Verona were relegated last season.
