The return of the Champions League has once again brought Europe's biggest football cultures together, with supporters turning stadiums, streets and pubs into stages for some memorable displays of fandom.
Among the standout moments were Paris Saint-Germain supporters celebrating Ousmane Dembele, Sporting CP bringing one of their most recognisable songs to another European night at the Alvalade, and Lens fans creating a spectacular travelling atmosphere in Prague.
FootballGroundGuide takes a look at three of the best supporter moments from the opening Champions League round, and the meaning behind the chants and scenes that made them stand out.
PSG – “Ousmane, Ballon d'Or!”
Match: PSG 6-1 Slovan Bratislava (Champions League)
Chant: “Ousmane, Ballon d'Or!”
PSG supporters were singing “Ousmane, Ballon d'Or!” for Ousmane Dembele during his impressive two-goal, two-assist performance against Slovan Bratislava at Parc des Princes, effectively turning the chant into a celebration of their star forward's status at the top of the game.
Luis Enrique even referenced it after the match, via L'Equipe, providing unusually strong confirmation of the chant and its prominence inside the stadium.
The timing made it particularly fitting, with Dembele providing four goal contributions as PSG began their European title defence with a 6-1 victory.
The simple hook of “Ousmane, Ballon d'Or!” effectively tells the Frenchman's story in just four words, while adding to the growing noise around him as he looks to retain the prize.
Sporting CP – “O Mundo Sabe Que”
Match: Sporting CP 3-1 Galatasaray (Champions League)
Chant: “O Mundo Sabe Que”
Sporting supporters welcomed another Champions League night at Estadio Jose Alvalade by singing “O Mundo Sabe Que” before kick-off, with the crowd then moving into the ‘Marcha do Sporting' as the teams emerged.
The Champions League anthem itself was heavily booed, adding to the sense that this was Sporting's night from the outset, via Abola.
The words “O Mundo Sabe Que” translate as “The world knows that”, forming the opening of one of Sporting's most recognisable terrace songs.
The chant is a declaration of loyalty to the club and has become synonymous with the atmosphere inside Alvalade, making its appearance before a major European fixture particularly fitting.
Lens – Supporters take over Prague
Match: Slavia Prague 2-3 Lens (Champions League)
Chant: Lens supporters singing and chanting during their Prague march
Lens provided one of the best away-support spectacles of the opening Champions League round, with more than 1,000 travelling supporters gathering in Prague before making their way towards the Eden Arena.
French outlet So Foot reported that supporters were already singing together in the basement of an Irish pub before setting off for the Fortuna Arena.
The singing continued onto the streets, with footage showing the large Lens contingent marching through Prague with flares and chants before taking their place in the away end.
Their efforts were rewarded in dramatic fashion too, as Lens overturned a 2-0 deficit with two stoppage-time goals to win 3-2.
It was a reminder that some of the best European supporter moments happen long before the first whistle, with Lens turning a Champions League away trip into a travelling celebration of the club, complete with songs, a city-centre march and thousands of voices behind the team.
